Imports - Best way to check if they're not stolen?

try www.bimta.com (british independant motor trade association)
i had them do my r33 before i sold it, top service!! takes about a week or so, you get a certificate and decal for the windscreen (proves its not nicked to plod if they pull you over) and they give you a money back guareentee should it prove to have been nicked in japan at a later date
cant recommend them enough...very professional!
edited to say that the money back guarentee applies to the cost of the car not the £70 fee......an absolute bargain!
you cant lose

No doubt been discussed before but I take it an HPI won'tshow up anything on a fresh Jap import? Is there a way of contacting the Japanese police to find out? I think Top Gear covered this but I wasn't really paying attention.
Found a replacement for the scoob which I like but need to be sure of its past, obviously.
Any help appreciated.

Why settle for third best????
No need to buy a 'Grey' these days - do the wise thing and buy a nice FSH UK model .......... its where the sensible money is
Oh, yes, you may be wondering what is Second best? well, a Euro Import of course. Massive depreciation on BOTH types - dont waste your money

LOL @ Pete and his Euro Imports view...
If I remember rightly Pete you have a MY99, optimistically worth £11k now, but cost £21k new, whereas the same Euro Import was £15k new and worth £10k now So who's suffered the 'massive' depreciation now Not that I own(ed) a Euro import (or for that matter a UK car, I found my Jap import depreciated much less )

Buy import car from big dealer. No HPi worries.
I have had an imported Sti V5 for 14 months.
Not a single problem (apart from more costly inusrance)
and saved over 5 grand over the very similar UK P1.
Don't be put off by biased UK mags/sources.
