Default Should I contemplate buying a car that has a oil leak?

As above.

The car in question is a JDM S/tb Forester about 80k miles (not km's). From the photos it looks like the front seal leaking over the exhaust and has been for a long while, the underside of the engine bay is a mess. Apart from this though it looks to be in fairly good nick. STI struts, lowered a bit, and has rota's fitted with good rubber.

Asking price is £1000 lowered from 1300 a few months back.

What do you think?

If its just the front seal its no problem, the cam belt can be changed at the same time & only adds a few more minutes to the job.

I wouldn,t. If the leak looks like its been there for a while ,it seems to me that they have not looked after the car very well.

If it's the rocker cover it's no big deal, half the people on here wouldn't have cars if nobody bought an impreza with an oil leak from the rocker cover. Just factor it into the price.

So 2 to 1 votes

I was more thinking along the lines of what could have been damaged. Obviously I'd have a good listen whilst looking around.

Would there be any way of knowing if at some point a low oil level had hurt the engine or turbo?

Its a thousand pound car.

I would have a go at tackling it yourself not a major problem and very common. So yes, I would buy it.
