Sucking in too much air...

Default Sucking in too much air...

my 97 uk turbo is slightly dying...

I've been told that my air flow meter may be gone, hence it starting but stalling and having no revs.

General questions:

Is it an easy job in terms of part(s) and time?

Can the car be driven at all since the check engine light is on?

When it gets to temp, revs returns to normal and sounds ok...

Any advice/answers would be great as I am still learning about it! Will have to wait til Monday to get RAC to tow it to garage.
Also showing it on 25th July at Devon car show... what a time to be ill!

Check the actual code first BUT
Easy to change but part is pricey iirc
If the CEL is on because of the MAF i wouldn't drive it as it could cause the engine to go pop.

Ok diagnostics first then thanks

At least I now know it is not driveable

it's a two minute job but the mafs aren't cheap, around £250 for your car

open the bonnet, look at the airbox on the left, you'll see the air pipe going to the turbo, it's about 3" round. The maff is located within a round housing that has wires going to it. should have either a green or orange band going round the case, undo the clips and replace unit.

Easy to check if it's the maf, connect the two black wires under the stearing wheel and read the ECU fault codes, have a look here to see how to do this.

Cool, will get a mate who knows his way round jap cars to have a look again, better than paying someone to check!

how many hours labour for maf stuff? found sensors/meters on ebay and just about died.

You can fit the MAF yourself it only takes about 2 mins as DannyBoy said.

Speak to these guys http://www.enginetuner.co.uk/home.htm as they are relatively close to you to see if they can help with getting you MAF

Good news then, I have competent friends who can install it and I've been to Alan Jeffrey before for work. Would be so much easier!! Thanks myblackwrx

Would you always recommend brand new subaru parts OR used but working ones off ebay?

Personally i would go for genuine,brand new Subaru parts ,not easy on the pocket,but for me easier on the mind that part has been properly tested whereas the ones on ebay may or may not work (no matter what they say).

Ok cheers... strangely it's fixed itself i.e. is running normally now after not starting it for a few days. No CEL no problems with revs no nothing. Still going to check with garage.
