4pot or not to 4 pot
|Hey all,
just after peopls opinion, My car (classic my95 wrx) is getting ready for disks pads all round. At the mo its just got the one or it is two pots.
Would people recommend instead of buying disks and pads for mine but instead spending the money on getting at least a 4 pot upgrate?
I have noticed a few being sold on here with disks and pads for about £150. Just thinking if thats the case i may as well seens as it would probably cost more than that for disks and pads up front.
also does anyone know why i cant post in the WANTED section?? I could before but cant seem to do it now!!!

4 pots is a good upgrade and looks nicer through the wheels but if your only running standard setup i would imo go for a set of grooved discs and uprated pads on the front ul notice a difference trust me on the standard 2 pot calipers

I have 17" alloys now. I believe they are later model gold alloys so i believe they do clear.
I would love a brambo or alike upgrade but that aint going to happen just yet when i need to spend cash on other things.
With the 4 pot upgrade, do you or can you upgrade the brake servo to a later model or are they all the same anyway?

Go with the 4 pots Darren. I've had Scoobs with both and can safely say the WRX with the crappy 2 pots felt dangerous under heavy braking. With a good set of grooved discs and pads with 4 pots up front you will feel the difference straight away.

I suppose you can upgade other parts of the system if you wanted/needed to but just the calpiers/discs/pads will suffice, would also advise changing to stainless brake hoses, Hel or Goodridge

I did the upgrade on my 93wrx used standard discs, better pads, goodridge hoses and good quality 5.1 fluid and they were so much better.
Depending on the age of the 4 pots you buy it also may be worth refurbing them (repainting and replacing the seals).
How much power is your car running?

Absolutely change to 4 pots over just uprating discs and pads for your 2 pots!!!!!
A nice set of subaru 4 pots will make a big difference, and then better still - as already mentioned, decent pads, DOT 5.1 fluid, braided lines, and discs will finish it off a treat!!
If you source some used 4 pots they will probably be quite tired like mine had become over time
Re-furb them .... and you will notice a mssive difference
If you are doing just normal road driving with the occasional short spirited driving and braking, then id say get 4 pots with decent pads.
If you are doing alot of heavy braking from high speeds then you will need the 5.1 fluid, braided lines, and better discs too!

I've gone from standard 2 pots on my MY97 to Compbrake 4 pots & 330s as 2 pots might as well have chocolate discs really IMO. Now got some lovely Prodrive 4 pots (and Subaru 2 pots for the rear as the standard one pot sliders are truly horrible) ready to replace these with. Not trying to sell without paying (as I'll be paying up & selling some other bits too) but these will be available soonish if you're interested......

I upgraded to the 4pots with normal discs [but theyre slightly bigger discs than 2pot ones??] and on standard pads [got a spare set of pagid t3055, dont know if theyre any good, came brand new with calipers but kept old ones on for now]. Plus got braided brake lines too. new dot 4 fluid too.
Anyway I was really disappointed with the upgrade that cost me £150 parts and £50 labour! Could only feel a slight improvement. I was expecting more tbh. when pads are hot theyre crap too, dont bite at all.
To improve the cars braking shall I fit the pagid pads [or r they rubbish] or a new set of decent pads, or shal I upgade the brake servo/master cylinder???
Any advice guys?

Yup. Got them on mine.
You'll probably need to remove the back plate though.
Got the 2 pot rears also.

am i right in thinking the Post 2001 2 pot rears have bigger disks than the pre 2001?
To fit pre 2001 you need a bracket and handbrake shoes, if the post 2001 2pots have bigger disks is it as simple to fit them to a classic??
I read that the pre 2001 has 266mm disks and the post has 290mm is this correct?
I think i have finally made a decision and i am going to up grade to 4pot 2 pots and upgrade to something like k sport in the distant furture when i get the rest of the car done.

Post and pre 2001 both use 290mm discs.
The ones which use 266mm rear discs are for sliding single pot calipers.
You've made the right decision by moving to 4 pots. Save your cash on upgrading the rears until you have bigger brakes on the front than the 4s and spend the money on decent pads.
A wide range of discs and pads always in stock. Tel 01462 488244.

subaru 4pots on front and subaru 2pots on rear are great on a classic, when fitting them use the new ebc bluestuff pads all round with ebc discs or braketech discs.
i think you will find that after fitting these you wont need to upgrade to ksports

Try these if you want to fit two pot rears, I did Ian also sells the matching discs and you don't need to upgrade the handbrake pads

Its an upgrade, still not the best for your money though, having had a new MY00, the brakes were pathetic didnt even go with upgraded discs or pads, just went straight for a brembo/AP setup you wont get stopping power like that out of the subaru 4 pots, that I can ensure you (and even my astra's 300mm brakes are better than the standard 4 pot setup )

simple equation for settling the 2/ 4 pot debate.........
260 odd bhp scooby on 2 pot fronts hit the brakes in anger =
260 odd bhp scooby on 4 pot fronts hit the brakes in anger = none of the above!!
best mod i made on my classic
