Default Newbie Buying Advice Please WRX vs STI

Hello All

Im in the market for my very first scooby.

Up until now I have been looking at an older wrx, however noticed this Sti for sale today which I plan to look at over the weekend.

However, being totally new to this, how can I tell that its an STi instead of the standard WRX with badges added on ? This will be the first STi that I am going to look at (and probably not the last).

What should I be looking out for, I searched the forums before posting and also spotted the impreza wikipedia explanation, but it didnt really answer my questions.

I have attached a link;

http://edinburgh.gumtree.com/edinburgh/90/64083790.html

Also, can I have some rough advice on how much this is going to insure, what are other people paying. Im a fortunate that im 36 and have 9 years no claims and live in a fairly decent area. Now, I know that I have to shop around for quotes etc and Ive spotted your insurance thread, but a ball park figure as to what I should be looking at would be great.

Thanks very much in advance
Andy

Hi, the chassis number will start with GC8 if its an sti, also, alloy wishbones, red inlet manifold, red stitching on steering wheel, sti seats, for insurance you will get a cheaper quote if its got a cat 1 alarm/immobilizer with cert. aplan do my insurance.

Thanks for the replies so far folks, but if all wrx start with gc8 how will I tell the difference between that and the sti ?

sounds like sti seats, wish bones and red bits are pretty easy just to "add"

Cheers

There is a list of codes here, gc8 is the model (ie classics built between 1993 and 2000), if you look here http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.p...ProductionRuns
It should show you what model to what year, but that has a MY99 front but a MY98 rear small spoiler, so I would be weary of what the car is or if its been crashed/repaired.

Lots more out there, check out www.pistonheads.co.uk which is a popular place for scoobs or in the for sale section on here.

Many thanks for the replies

going to see it today, so will be able to report back.

the engine code list has given me a great starting point. Thank you.

I have also ordered the £20 AA Hpi check as it had the best reviews.

Cheers

Just remember the hpi will only cover the years the car has been in the uk. Being an import They will have no idea of its history in japan.

Well went to see the car, its was a wrx with sti bits so decided to buy it with some money off, got it for a good price and I am delighted. Pick it up this evening.

Gary Moulson sorted me out this morning, what an absolute diamond that bloke is!
Wasnt quite the cheapest quote I had, but there was only £20 in it, so went with Moley as the service was so good and I could actually speak to someone who knew what they were talking about.

First time that I had ever spoke to him.......

One word : Legend.

It is a tough choice I think between a newer wrx or older sti for someone new to scoobies, I also bought a wrx recently as all the sti's for the money i had looked like they'd been ragged as much as the pro Rooney walloped (and I'm talking about the granny here!). But then you start reading scoobynet and get drawn in to improving and you start to question...
