Change the fogs for driving lights. Fogs have a short, wide, low beam pattern which is for illuminating the kerb/verge and white line just a few meters in front of the car. For unlit backroads you want a long narrow beam....

Sort of. Driving lights need to be wired with their own switch which only works in conjunction with the main beam headlights, so a relay and a little wiring. You may find that someone makes DL's as a direct replacement for Subaru fogs. I believe the dealer supplied ones were rebranded PIAA's or Hella's.

Totally agree my car has some cibie driving lamps which were bought from scoobysport 6 yrs ago, and on long country roads the difference is amazing . I already have philips extreme power headlights which are good, but when you put the main beam on, it's like dawn breaking lol, not much good for foggy conditions imho , but great for late night country roads

Go for the Hellas, then, when you can afford it, upgrade them to HID........like driving in daylight

Oh, and budget for a set of clear lens protectors, available from the USA, I believe for around £15, cheaper than a broken lens, esp when you get up to HID.
