if I recall basically it vents petrol fumes into the canister which reacts with the charcoal substance within then vents out to atmosphere clean so there is no harmful fumes kicking around.

not sure what it does but no you dont need it and you would benefit from having more space to put something else

seen a few cars with it removed

Carbon canister sits on a vent from the fuel tank. The carbon caputures the fumes from the tank when the engine is off and when started the vacuum in the plenum at idle draws the fuel vapour from the carbon.
If you connect the vent from the tank straight to the plenum you can have fuel vapour building up in the inlet manifold which can cause further problems.

Dont believe its part of engine emmisions but more about preventing fuel vapour being released to atmosphere,

The reason the guy probably asked you is that you can do a tidier bypass of the canister by re-routing the take-offs that normally go into and out of the fuel line assembly if you've already got the whole thing off the car, which of course you will have when your parallel mod is being done. So long as he retains the stock one-way valve and puts in an outlet pipe to the original vent-hole in the chassis, it's probably not a bad idea to get it done. It would give you room to fit an oil catch tank later on, for example.

Your call at the end of the day though.

Provided there's still a one-way valve and a vent hose into the chassis-leg to relieve any pressure build-up in the tank, no harm and no smell at all. I did the mod myself towards the beginning of the summer, driven the car daily since and not once noticed any petrol smell, even in the few hot spells we had.

In my case I wanted the space to fit a catch tank.
