Exclamation horrible loud grinding/whining noise whilst decelarating

hi all ive been a member for a while but not been on as ive not had a scooby in a while so first things first HELLO lol,

ok i just bought a 1997 catalunya now when im in gear and the clutch is up i get a small sort of whine/wind coming through a gap sort of sound but in second gear whilst decelarating its really loud and sounds like its badly grinding and whining its especialy bad when going down hill and letting the engine do the braking but as i say it is pretty loud and quite scary any idea's?

Sounds like it could be the syncromesh in the gearbox. Tend to wear more in the lower gears as these are where the car gets ragged the most.

They tend to be quieter when coldr as the oil is thicker when cold and it damps the noise somewhat. As the oil thins out then noises will become more obvious.

Its a gearbox rebuild you will need in the longterm

If you are getting gear OK without crunching then it could just go on like that for years. As its an old car with no doubt countless times of hard driving just be more caring for it and things could last ages.

It does sound like the gearbox needs a rebuild or better still a replacement.
I sold a 50k box of my 99 car for £250, a replacement box is your best option imo and DIY if you are handy with spanners.

right looked at it today its definetly coming from the gearbox or clutch when in nuetral if i press the clutch there is no noise if i let it up it sounds like there are lots of tiny peices being spun around by something but only when the clutch is let up is this anymore help o and it supposedly had a new clutch about 300 miles ago

Paul

I would stop mincing around asking people to guess on forums mate - it sounds pretty bad and needs the attention of a specialist. The box needs to be dropped out at the least. With something like that i would not drive it further either.

Diagnosis is best done by a professional and is beyond the scope of us. Its certainly not something to relax about - thats not normal in any way. Get it checked
Good luck mate but

You need a UK spec gearbox, either another TY752 or the later (and stronger) TY754 box from a UK classic.

If you are in Scotland, speak to AndyF www.andyforrestperformance.co.uk about a replacement - he will be able to sort one out for you. A second hand TY752 should be no more than £200 - just make sure its not been reconditioned with a tin of hammerite.

As bob r says, it's not the most difficult job to DIY. If you've got the time but not the money, i would swap it out myself

Rebuilding it is gong to cost a **** load more than replacing it with a second hand unit. I would guess you could get it sorted for £350 all in.

To be fair, these cars are not cheap to keep on the road, buy cheap, buy twice.

What clutch was put in? Certain aftermarket clutches and flywheel sets gives off a very audible deccelerating noise when in gear which sounds like what you mentioned.

well heres the news so far the clutch has a bit snapped off of the thrust bearing (more than likely been twanged off the gearbox when fitted) but also the gearbox has metal shards in the oil so i now how to wait to see if the gearbox specialists can refurbish it so lets hope it can be done, but now im looking at a new clutch and refurbished gearbox what a nightmare only had it 24 hrs before this all happened never had any probs with my other 4 imprezas
