would you touch an impreza with 120k
hi im thinking of trading my evo3 in for an 04 wrx wagon but would i be swapping one problem car for possiably more problems or would this mileage still be nothing to worry about any advice would be helpful cheers j

Hi there i'm brought mine wagon with 88k miles and now have around 96k and still going strong.
On your side, depends on full history etc.But if look OK and drive OK,why not..

Depends how much it's going for. Personally though, I don't think I'd buy a car (regardless of make/model) with that high mileage - I guess there's a stage where the likelihood of encountering problems increases, and over 100k I'd imagine that likelihood starts to increase.
To be fair scoobies are very reliable and you'd probably be fine for ages - just personal preference really.

In my opinion it does put people of when buying a car but its good bartering point, stuff could go wrong on an impreza at 40 thousand the same as 120 thousand. It does depend on how the miles have been driven, nower days is 120,000 really that high?

Depends on good service history etc and there should be plenty of it. My '03 wrx has over 100k with no issues and looks like a car with at least half that mileage. I took it for an enthusiastic blat yesterday and it feels as good as ever. My long term plan I suppose now will be an engine rebuild in the end and I think you have to have that at the back of your mind if you are thinking of buying a high miler. Cosmetically it should have no rust and be in good condition despite the miles.

I'm totally agree with Probein. It depends on how much is the car going for? Personally i would only consider it if it has FSH and has significant savings over another, so if something does go wrong, you could always use the cash savings for replacement/repairs.

The thing is theres this idea that once a car passes 100K it becomes a ticking time bomb. As Clarky says, its engine could go at 40 or 120. Age is a factor obviously. My Jeep Cherokee only has 57K on it but its still 11 years old so things are going to need looking at soon.
History, condition and of course price are main factors when looking at cars at this mileage.
Some do seem to put too much faith into a car with low mileage and its worth.

My wifes forester turbo was sold with 168,000 miles on and still running as good as the day it was bought. It was recently sold at 194,000 miles and still on the original engine and gearbox.
If they are looked after they will run forever. Just dont skip the services.
My blob sti was sold with 118,000 miles on running 340bhp for over 60K.
On the other hand my MY00 classic had to be rebuilt at 65K and the gearbox was done at about 50K.

My Classic had clocked over 100,000 miles when I sold her. The only thing that went wrong (in the final months of my ownership) was the radiator sprung a leak and a CV Joint boot was split.
Original Clutch, Engine and Gearbox ... only one change of brake pads and discs.
The most reliable car I have ever owned ... serviced every 6 months religiously - nothing expensive, just carried out regularly.
I would buy a 120,000 miles Scooby, if:-
1. It had only 1 or 2 owners.
2. The Service History was impeccable, with all mileages adding up.
3. All MOT's present and correct.
4. If more than 1 owner, the second owner has owned for a good length of time.
5. It was cheap enough to repair and still be ahead over buying a low mileage example.
6. If the owner was straight, honest and reliable.
Good luck!

I wouldn't touch a turbo charged Impreza with that mileage.
No doubt it would have been driven hard at some point so Engine internals/Turbo/Gearbox would have been stressed and more likely to fail compared to a model with half th emileage.
imo of course.

i partly agree with bob r about engine internals and gearbox stresses etc...but as has been said before if it was taken care of properly i.e regular oil and filter changes and has full service history plus the price is right, then why not,no one on this earth is going to buy any performance car to just poddle along at 30 mph so as long as it is straight looking no accident damage you should be OK.

I have an MY93 WRX with over 200,000 miles on the clock - still with original engine and gearbox, running with a ScoobyECU for some time and decat, etc.
Still runs faultlessly, although the engine is a little tappety when cold. I've been the only UK owner and have had the car nearly 11 years and driven over 150,000 miles. Only needed recovery once, when the fuel pump died on the way home from work once.
Of most concern now is the bodywork, rather than mechanical!!

the chances are matey everything that will go wrong probebly has and has been fixed on it already, have a good run in it and have a good listen to the engine and box,. if it sounds sweet it generally is

In fact, I reckon you could probably quite easily find an 02 or even 03 WRX with lower mileage for that money.

hey Jay, I know a bit about the early evos and the E3 was the worst of the first 3.
I also know a little more about Impreza's.
As long as the Impreza has been reasonably looked after you should have no problems.
Go with the Impreza mate, either way its newer

i know this one has had engine rebuild with e6 pistons and e9 crank and now its only boosting to .6bar (should be .8) only had it 6mths and its cost more than 3yrs of scooby ownership j

my 95 v limited is on 124k, i had it at 110, my m8 had it for 5 yrs before me, the engine was rebuilt with new crank and oil pump at 96k and it ticks like a swiss watch. i have no problem with high miles if its been looked after.

basically, get a scooby mechanic to drive it. The real issue will be the gearbox, with that mileage and numbeer of owners, as it has been with most wrxs driven with any sort of spirit from low speed starts. Older scoobs will get radiator, wiring, various rubber components needing replaced due to a combination of weathering and use. The one you've seen should be better in this regard because of its relative youth. But given that the engine has been seen to, it's the synchro in the gearbox that you really want to be sure about. There really isn't anything much in them that can be a ticking time bomb that can't be diagnosed by an expert. Pretty reliable.
And just by the way...........wagons rule.
