Default tgv sensor advise

i put this in the technical section but though it might be worth putting here as well .

ive got code p1086 ,tgv sensor (lh) passenger side ,the mechanic told me that the whole unit with probe would need replacing and would be around 7hrs labour .
when ive done a fair bit of srearch it seems people have only needed to replace the actual sensor which is a 20mnute job .
has anyone have any experience with this ,how likely or unlikely is it that il need the whole unit ?
ive also read that the throttle position sensor is the same part and cheaper ,can anyone confirm this ?

thanks
