Tonight I realised why I bought Subaru
Wet tonight, windy, loads of wet leaves on the twisty B roads.
Just done a 45 mile round trip to drop off a repaired laptop at a friends house.
Front wheel drive and any sort of torque would have simply resulted in wheel spinning or loads of understeer, or both
STi hatch + Sport# =
Having driven FWD diesels for the last 15 or so years this is fun.

where abouts in lincolnshire was this?? I was doing the same thing (lincoln/washingboro'/tatershall/orby/grimsby) in a van!! ---- not nice, the combination of wet and wind made for slippy roads and reminded me why I hate Winter !!!!

I think you would have found any car driven sensibly perfectly capable in these conditions. I'm not trying to be sarcastic, love my scooby, but I have found subaru four wheel drive treacherous in slippery conditions.

What people seem to be forgetting is that when you have no grip due to road conditions, it doesn't matter whether you have fwd, rwd or 4wd, your going off the road.
Adapting for the conditions rather than hoping the car will do it for you is a far safer way of driving

I find it strange that a lot of people both Subaru drivers and more so those of other marques see Subaru drivers as invincible.
Probably because of WRC

surely anyone with any sense regardless of age would be aware of wet/slippy roads covered in leaves and possibly mud and drive to the conditions.
My last car was a 320bhp mr2 turbo and people were always telling me to be careful in the wet and so on but I never once had a problem because I drove to the road conditions and all inputs of power or steering or brakes were done gradually not just stamp on the pedal and point in the direction you want to go.

Yeah - but that wasn't AWD
And you didn't see professional rally drivers on TV driving it sideways on a loose surface at 60 mph either
Also - your comments are not sensible either in the great scheme of things
"anyone with any sense regardless of age"
Here lieth the problem - young bucks don't have any sense.
Especially when they're behind the wheel of a "rally car"

Have I missed a post in this thread?
The OP is talking about how superb his Impreza felt on a 45 mile trip that included wet roads and leaves... and somehow it's turned into a young holligan driving sideways?

I drive a fwd diesel as well as the scoob, if your driving like a hooligan then yes, it will result in spinning wheels and lots of understeer, hence my comments before
And wet leaves as said can hide all sorts of wonderous things underneath (mud mainly) and i have already explained what happens if you dont adapt to the road conditions

I'll beg to differ. AWD, low CoG (alloy boxer engine) and decent f:r weight distribution will result in better utilisation of available grip. How you choose to drive it/crash it is up to you.

I don't think anyone is disagreeing the Impreza grips well... I think they were advising he take less risks where fallen leaves and B roads are involved
On a seperate note, I took the old man out the other day and after the 4th corner he laughed and said "this thing corners like a bloody go-cart"
He drives an A6 boat BTW...which you "guide" rather than steer...
and as for feedback through the steering wheel..fat chance

I agree .Why is it that someone on here posts a thread and all of a sudden the forum police have to start spouting off about what he should have done.He only said he enjoyed the drive and it is his car

Low centre of gravity, fantastic wet weather tyres etc etc etc, you come round the corner at inappropriate speeds for the conditions and it will bite you!

6 months ago I'd have agreed with you 100%...
But after reading that BMW M5 forum thing where everyone told this kid to slow down (after he was bragging about speeds etc in his dad's M5)... and then they all heard he had killed himself (and 4 others I think) 2 weeks later while driving 100mph+....
So I can understand if people want to suggest caution... you only live once

Oh dear what have I started!
I had a fun, safe drive in inclement weather conditions, I was driving within my limits, the prevailing road conditions, the limits of my car whilst respecting other road users.
I suspect some folks on here maybe have said I was dawdling
I don't want to give anyone the impression I drive like a hooligan at any time.
