What exactly does the bright button do anyway, I have one on my MY00 and all it seems to do is make the clock display on the dash a tad bit brighter , I was expecting it to alter the luminious dials.

And surely it must do more than that huh?

Wonder how much planning went into implementing this button. I can just imagine the Subaru head interior designer saying "ok we are going to add a big button in the center console and name it the 'bright button' and not only will it brighten up the digital clock but it will ............. Hmmm no lets not confuse the driver."
Yes I wouldn't swap my bright button for the world.

I'm sorry there is absolutley no question it is a daytime control.
There are three states for the clock
Main lights off = Clock bright
Main Lights On/Bright Off = Clock Dim
Main Lights On/Bright On = Clock Bright
The only time you need "hit the bright swicthes" is when you have turned the main lights on during the day i.e. Fog / Rain. This Dims the clock which can then be restored to full daytime brightness so you can see it through your... errm... er sunglassess (in the fog ??)
OK I admit it, its useless - but I'm glad I'v got it

The BRIGHT button is an essential bit of kit. The Impreza wouldn't be an Impreza without one.
BTW - is it just my car, or doesn't the BRIGHT button itself (along with the headlamp washer button) illuminate at night?
Both these buttons are essentially "night time" buttons - seems silly that they're the only two that don't light up when the rest of the dash is illuminated.
Or is it just my car?

RichS>>I have to disagree, the BRIGHT button is very useful when driving in daylight, not when it's dark...esp when one is wearing sunglasses, try it, you won't be able to read the clock without it.
It's sweet.

Actually, the new, improved, Bright Switch (it is on the stalk and rotates now so must lose it's "button" name) has additional functions...
It also dims the outside temp and odometer displays

Okay, depends on how you use the button (if you even bother to use it.)
I, for example, leave it "on" i.e. "bright" during daytime driving, and would only use the button to dim the clock on a long night-time journey. Therefore I consider the button to be a night-time button!
Perhaps it's me who's got it back to front. I should re-label my bright button "DIM"
Anyway, does yours illuminate with the rest of your dash at night?

If you had climate control, standard fitment on my Legacy RS , you'd appreciate the BRIGHT button .... Give some thought and take pity on all those bright buttons that don't have enough to do on non-climate cars

Jza,
I detest CON tractors with that attitude.
BT52,
As I get a salary I suppose you could consider that I am a permie. At the minute I have 15 of the aforementioned CONtractors working their ***** off making themselves a small fortune. Considering I take 20% margin on each of them, they are also making me 3 small fortunes.
Thanks lads
p.s. I've decided to rewire the bright button to the set of bonnet mounted surface to surface missiles I've ordered. These can be used for removing outside laners and will brighten up my journies considerably

I call it the "..Still think my car's basic"? Button
All ov me mates have heard of the legendary performance that goes with scoobs but most of them had never been in one till i got mine.
They all get in and say things like "its a bit basic" or " Seats are cool but the switchgear looks cheap" or even "Is that all that button does, ha ha thats ****"
Nail it out of a roundabout in 2nd and while they are trying to catch breath, straighten thier necks and stop whimpering, I ask them about ...THAT button and duya know what, they all say the same thing. "With performance like that, who cares about the sodding button. Can we do that again?"

Here's one for all you "Bright Button" geeks out there.
Having owned a Euro Import and UK Impreza of the same model year, one of the very few differences was that the Bright Button and the adjacent blanking plate were swapped over in their orientation.
Not that anyone gives a ****, it's hardly likely to turn up in a pub quiz now is it!

Meetoo!
Must have hit the button when fitting my Disklok, but was amazed that the car started perfectly the next morning! Only once though.
