How quick is a P1 compared to other scoobs?
#1
Sorry if this has been done to death but Im interested in upgrading my scoob. Currently Ive got a MY99 with ppp and a de-cat. Ive never had it on a rolling road but looking at other peoples dynos i reckon it must be making something between 250-265 bhp.
Ive never driven a P1 but an Evo article drew a "ah my god" comparison between the P1 and an RB5. Has anyone compared my kind of set-up with a P1?
ps- Ive thought about the UK STI but i reckon IMHO even with the ppp its power/weight ratio will be lower than that of a de-catted P1. Any alternative views/comments
Cheers

drive one, i used to have a my97 with a full decat exhaust, fancied a change, tried an rb5 wr, not impressed with performance but did like the ride and turn in, tried the p1, brilliant, picked one up the next week

£8k upgrade cost-so yeah if its only a subtle difference then i aint interested.
Its amazing how on the road/real performance differences between cars can be much less than on paper. the other day i had a rare play with an Astra GSI (J Reg) and it was actually a pritty close run thing. i couldn't have pulled more than 5/6 car lengths away from him up to 80mph. Dont know what those cars are rated at (150-170?-anybody?) but the maxpower exhaust hinted at some poss mods.
I love the P1 but my missus hates the slotted front lip (shes not a big scoob fan anyway- she calls the seats "wing-backs"!!). Maybe I'll wait till they're in the sub £20k bracket.

I have a decatted P1 with ITG panel filter, and was on the trip up to Nottingham last weekend leading a convoy of 7 different Impreza's on the route given to us by Bitten Hero (Thanks Mate it was brilliant ).
The car directly behind me most of the time was Gossy the Valeter in his modded Wagon (Well I certainly hope its modded ).
I don't think either of us were really pushing it but there never really was that much of a gap between us, and judging by the look on his face in my rear view mirror, he was definitely enjoying the drive as much as I was
Basically the extra performance of the P1 is unlikely to make you much quicker, being honest most Scooby's will go quicker than most people will ever actually need to go. All purely MHO's as usual!

He was well up for it -even leaning forward as if he was on a horse LOL.
I am a wuss when it comes to "slamming" gear changes (couldn't be that mechanically unsympathetic to my baby).

I have a UK95 which is probably running around 220bhp at the moment (pure estimate) with the mods on it (though SS downpipe going on friday ). I have been in convoy with mirAGE's P1 a few times and can honestly say it depends on the situation.
Down the motorway, I stand no chance at all! The higher end grunt of the P1 is just phenomenal.
Similarly, if he pegs it off on a country road then the gap gets bigger and bigger, though up to "National limits" it is not massive.
If I get off first, with the P1 chasing then it holds it's own, up to said motorway speeds. Having been in the P1 though as a passenger it is staggering - second / third gear are awesome.
Will be interesting to see what tht d/p does to mine and how much I get at Power Engineering this month. My car always feels fast to me when puhing on - the paper and real world comparisons are what matter.

Are you sure your car is set up to the optimum because i have just sold my cossie for a Impreza. The cossie ran usually about (295bhp high of 317) at 22psi and would pull out sizeable gaps very quickly esp after 60mph. My point is i put a lot of mods onto my cossie b4 i sold it and when it went on the rollers after a mod it never gave what i thought it should untill it had been set up.
Secondly i owned a gsi and i would of thought it would been less close than that.Unless as you said it was well modded. all imho of course

Ive never had the car modded as such just pp'd by pro-drive and then the front cat removed. Ive been thinking about the dawes ebc's etc and would love to have the car "optimised" as you put it. What exactly dod you mean by that?
i dont know of anyone out there aside from say from Bob Rawle but then he's selling you a product package isn't he? -Motec/ link etc.
I love driving cars but have never been into the mechanical side. Hats off to v helpful people like John Banks who do do loads of their own R&R but their threads make me feel "special needs." LOL

Well with my MY00 PPP'd and decatted car with the SCOOBYMANIA downpipe (which is great and isnt as intrusive as some downpipes you can get) and sounds awesome to boot and the car pulls cleanly to the red line (in any gear except the little bit of overboost which will soon be sorted )

Hi
I have a STi V5 with uprated exhaust and no other mods.
Must be about 280/300 BHP.
Performance is brilliant. Hardly ever need to drop gears wildly.
P1 is slightly heavier than my car but performance must be very
similar. Much cheaper than P1.
My 2 cents worth.

More serious answer is spend some money on tweaking suspension/brakes/handling and then any additional P1 has in power is negated by your ability round corners and braking.
As I've said before, spend loads of money & get something with big bhp - ain't worth tuppence if it can't go round a corner or stop
P1s are easy Track Meat (most of them less modded or driven by Mellow) in PTMW! and it's 'cos of the handling/braking Remember that I've only got PPP and nothing else, not even an air filter

I had a 99yr with ppp and thought that was quick but there is no comparison with the P1. On twisty roads it is really planted and the extra grunt at autobahn speeds is unbelievable!! The difference is much bigger on the road than on paper, drive one on the right roads and you'll see what I mean.
Be sorry to see it go

Better brakes = more bhp and lb torque
Better suspension = the same as above
Stiffer car = as above
Upgraded anti roll bars/bushes = as above
In truth, all of the above is worth a minimum 100bhp and torque extra over standard, motorway's, A or B roads are not the comparison, the track most certainly is.....I'm out at Oulton again tomorrow with 400 bhp EVO's and I'll guarantee they'll hold me up
My point is simply that a well set up car will out perform a greater powered car even of the same marque...
However, I must say that now getting my P1 set up right....I'd like more power ....there's still the odd Westie (eh John) and an Escort cossy or 2 that I struggle with

Matt, just order a Dawes with a 1.5mm bleed hole from performanceexhausts.net and run about 1.2 bar - about 17.5 PSI. If you don't like it sell it - they are only £35. Then it will be as quick as an unmodded P1. This is about the limit for the track at 15 degrees C - if it is hotter or you do a lot of laps turn in down a bit to standard PPP levels or just run the PPP. On the road in the UK climate I think a Dawes or boost controller is safe up to the PPP fuel cut which is 19.3 PSI or thereabouts - but you have to run about 18.5 PSI to ensure you never hit fuel cut on cold mornings/thrash etc.

I agree with Mellow about the suspension and brake mods-I was at Elvington in October and even though he wasn't that much quicker on the straights he absolutely murdered me on braking-even though I'd upgraded mine(gtir)I've done further mods to suspension and now got better brakes so might be able to provide a better account of myself if I see him on track again.

I know i am being cheeky and posting a question on someone elses thread here but i was reading all the stuff that has gone before and i was wondering what this " Dawes " thing is. I run a MY98 PPP with de-cat and HKS air filter (not full induction) and was wanting to know what it does.
I know it's most likely to be something fairly straight foreward but if anyone could tell me i would be greatful.
Cheers

Everyone keeps saying about brakes and suspension.
Isn't the new setup on the UK sti better in both departments, brembo brakes, Inverted struts etc. When I drove one it handled faultlessly.
I'd advise having a good drive in a uk sti.
I don't think youd be dissapointed

PTMW! has Brembo callipers but they're not the same as on the STi7 - better.
Also has more efficient discs.
Inverted struts? Leda B adjustable coil-overs.
Not a case of mine's better than yours rather quality over mass-production.
Added to that certain other handling enhancements...
Saying that, an out of the box STi UK is going to be better than a standard MY99 or MY01 WRX for the reasons you've stated.
However, once the moddy bug steps in...

nice to speak to you again, been on my hols.
Agreed, I think the sti has the potential to be an excellant starting point for anyone. Already modded pretty well with excellent mods to come no doubt. Seems a good idea for some to jump up the (modded ladder) my buy an sti rather than a wrx + bits.
Yours sounds a well sorted car. Hope mine comes up to expectations.
Q. Can you tell me how to find my original posting as the search is down. My cars been built and i,m getting exited.

Sorry m8 - search is down but add 1 week on your order date calculate the number of days since now & selec view x days on the general forum and browse the threads until you find it. End of Feb?
Have you got a final spec & do you know exactly what it is you are now buying & from whom? Still well interested.

What does a standard "no frills" P1 push out for Bhp?? I believe it is 280, also would be interested to know what the best thing would be to get more BHP out of my baby..as mine is STANDARD AT PRESENT!!!
And also what tyre pressures should I set out for P Zeros??
Any help would be appreciated..

Cheers for the replies guys
Suspension/brakes- that will be why me ap6 pots will be going on next week. i cant wait. Ive already got 17's on. Dont want the ride to be any harsher so that will do for me.
I agree that an STI V5-6 would be just as good as a P1 (bearing in mind the saving) but mint low milers are like hens teeth these days.
Dont get me wrong, my car is bloody quick- its just ive got used to it.
John
Put it like that -the dawes isn't much of a financial risk. Of course i'd have to get a boost gauge and presumably an AFR meter. However i thought the Dawes was no longer the way to go.

Dennisi,
I had my P1 rr'ed at Power Engineering when it was standard and it was putting out 282 bhp,
since then I have added a full decat and uprated the air filter and there is a noticeable difference. However the thing that has made me faster than any other mod is the Brembo AP Brake kit I have put on

sorry for the late reply.
My point was i sold my cossie because it was only quick on about 20 days a year( dry straight roads free of gravel). The final straw was the Hybrid turbo which i thought would give good power, it did but at the expense of turbo lag ( not quick till 4000rpm then in with a bang).
Although the cossie is a quicker car in a straight i bought a subaru as it was the quicker car over a distance.
I was worried of growing bored with it but i think the answer is not max bhp but the whole package, as mentioned grip, traction and brakes. all these are superior to the sierra.
i think i have waffled to much now
