6-speed conversion is very strong and cheaper than the above.

Use a 05 WRX box.. My RB5 has one fitted, all you need to change are the outer CV Joints.

i've been informed the 05 WRX box Has a stronger case, stronger 3rd an 5th gears.

am looking at a quaife gearkit with group n ratios, top speed doesn't bother me so I wouldn't mind if it topped out at 120-130

All the decent 5 speed upgraded gearsets cost you decent cash, a fully built ppg is 5k but still uses the standard 5th gear (which is normally the one that lets go first).
None of the 5 speed boxes or the conversions are as strong as the 6 speed box.

Very true.

Prefered the gear ratios of my five speed over the six.
I went six speed in my classic for the reliabilty

Its horses for couses

Same here. I now have a classic running 400+ with the same torque from a 2.5 conversion, and have gone for the 6-speed.

Scoobyclinic do a gearkit and its tested to about 585lb/ft, it started at roughly £1800 when it was first marketed, they say its far better than the ppg kits that they've destroyed on previous cars. I dont know if its still at this price, i would go for this kit over the six speed as the six speed is a really heavy box. It can only be fitted into the 754 casing so make sure you factor that into the price if yours is an early classic with the 752 case.

hi all i have a 1998 v5 uk with mods and 1st gear will not enguage as i know its the plastic ends on the selector,i have bought another box with rear diff 3.9. ratio and mine is 4.1 ratio im goin to rebiuld my box but as im after quicker off the line, which would be the better set up to use,as i was told i could use the clousters out of my 4.1 in the 3.9 gearbox and i myt end up with a ratio what im after.

can anybody help ive also got a gearbox rebuid manuel for subarus which is a price less information, only obtained by dealers and official mechanics ,as ive had it for a while now and nobody seems to be able to get this so if anyone needs help with there set up just ask

Can you give the exact model of your car as there is no such thing as a 1998 v5 uk car, and as the gearboxes changed between the 1998 and 1999 cars it's confusing.
Jdm sti's have versions and model years, ie version 5 sti my99, uk cars have Model years and not versions.
