It never happens to me :-(

Having collected my ailing Scoob yesterday, I was driving back following a friend on his R6. We came off the M25 at the Chertsey junction heading in towards Weybridge....
...only to come up behing a brand new 911 Turbo If anyone knows that road it is a straight dual carriageway with no buildings either side. So, the R6 pulls up next to him in the fast lane and slows down to look over at the 911 driver, with me coming round up their chuff.
911 immediately floors it with the bike gunning it next to him. I had a Grandstand view from the car as these two tore off side by side in front of me. The bike started to creep ahead down the road. At around the national limit the 911 looked like it was starting to claw back fractionaly so pulled into the fast lane behind the bike.
Then alas, the roundabout decided to ruin the party Bike slows down as heading off right and the Porker just nailed in through at a huge rate of knots and straight over! I was seriously impressed with the way in seemed to hunker down and blitz the roundabout.
Good on the 911 driver for his spirited performance! I so rarely see drivers of serious exotica flexing their toys legs, but this guy gave it some. Not only does he have a story to tell when he gets home, but I am sure he was wondering what car was stuck behind him all the way
If my car had been feeling better I am sure I would have closed up behind them. I was on low boost without my foot to the floor and they were only just creeping away from me. Whether it would have one or not, I wonder if I'll ever get to find out
I NEED my car back healthy so when these situations arise, I'm not thinking about my car's aparent month long flu!

The Porsche 911 Turbo hits 60 in 4.2 secs - according to the official Porsche site.
My Sti 5 in standard form does it in 4.6 and with 50 bhp over standard I would hope that might be 4.4 or even 4.3
I know the Porker would decimate me in a straight up to 150 but for a moment there yesterday, I was with him and I would love to have been in a healthy car with a good 10 mile drive over the Glens - in Germany of course

Similar (in that it involved a 911) happened to me a few weeks ago. Came up behind one in a very narrow country lane and we were both doing about 20 em pee aitch. I thought (hoped) as the lane opened out that he would go for it and he didn't disappoint. OK he had the drop on me but there was no way I would have caught him (MY97 no mods., dry road) - he went like the clappers. As you say, nice to see them hoofing it once in a while.
This one was had a rather fetching metallic lilac hue - still don't like them though.

Kingsize,
I done him up like a kipper !
Outbraked him at the roundabout and flew across it, 4 wheel drive traction come on !!!
I saw him later up the road and he was laughing his head off. His girlfriend looked a bit worried mind !
I would have loved to have been sitting in the Porker with the roof down whilst my scooby was trying to suck the car in to its bonnet vent at 7000rpm. Ho ho ho, that porker must have cost 50k

I was actually toying with the idea of selling my Carrera killer but now I'm thinking again.........
Perhaps a LINK is in order. I'm only running 275 at the mo, but twith the short box and **** all weight its quite fast

Makes me think:
996 Turbo = 3.6L Twin Turbo 4WD
STI = 2.0L Turbo
And I'm sure the Porsche engineers are pretty good.
Why is there even a fight? I have never had the opportunity to drive or be blown away by a modern 911 Turbo. Was properly blown away by a Testerossa (or 512?) from 80-150kmh couple of mths back. Its pretty much like an STI leaving a Golf GTI.

I am sure the Porsche is indeed one of the fastest things on the road - no question. Engineered to perfection...
BUT, the STi's ARE able to "compete". Seeing as mine cost some 65k less then the 911 Turbo, I am pretty happy
I wish I had been able to really try and see what the true difference was...

anders car was timed ny driven on several occasions during their test run which destroyed his clutch at 0-62 in 3.8 secs, in a standard (excluding full exhaust) jap 22B using proper timing gear.
Moray managed a 3.7 using a road dyno type device based on intgrated accelerometers with a claimed accuracy of 0.1sec. This was when he had a PE phase 1 and recored >340bhp on the rolling road.
Craig Hardman did a datron timed 3.7 in his car when running a low 360bhp.
technique is everything.
I am sure there are owners on this site who will massare a 911 turbo when they are given the chance, and I mean in a straight line. Aside from power differences, we have a weight advantage which is significant for everything but top speed.

Give me strength !! Some tuned Scoobies can match 0-60 times of 911 turbos but only heavily modified - the Porsche is standard - and 9.4 secs to 100 mph ? I doubt it guys. Come up behind a GT2 and I'd turn off coz u aint ever gonna match one of them.
Dream on guys - Our cars are extremely fast, but on the motorway my Sti RA (measured on the rolling road as 290 bhp) in fifth gear struggled to stay with a Jaguar XKR - his kickdown was awesome - I had to go into 4th - and thats in a RA !

Adam,
I am sure even a 350 bhp modded Scooby would give a 911 Turbo a hard time up to 100mph...
As I think we all agree, over 100 forget it, but over B-roads it would be a good match. Driver dependant of course!

I don't doubt the "value for money" advantage that the Scoob has over almost everything else. I'm sure this plus point features a lot in our decision to get one.
I commented from a pure performance perspective (PPP!). Can you imagine if any of us had the funds to mess around with a 3.6L Twin Turbo 4wd, we'd be talking sub-3 0-60's!
And 9.4sec to the ton? The std JDM-spec MY01 STI does it in 13sec and I'd thought that was alread pretty quick (seen the Elise's figure?).

Im sorry to read this bullsh*t about nearly having him in a scoob
i've driven a new carrera 4wd and it will destroy a scoob on any road straight or twisty never mind a turbo, its nice to dream but lets be real the guy was probably taking his sunglasses out of the glove box while you thought he was having a go.
And yes i do own a Scooby.
LOL Zippy (Flame-suit at the ready)

Elise std 0-100 is around 15/16 seconds - but play at your peril there are many variants and 0-60 an elise even in std will be winning - its post 60 that you will have the power advantage.
For the record the 111s variant I have is 14.2 secs

As you said Dave it was a new Porsche worth around £65,000 and its not just the car its the driver, his rear end was probably sqeaking in his pants taking a car worth that much around the roundabout at speed, but i'm sorry 3.6 litres against 2.0 Turbo, no chance.

What is the power to weight ratio of a 911 Turbo and a Scooby with say, 320 bhp? This will give a better guide line won't it??
Saying 3.0L twin turbo versus 2.0L is useless. What does a standard Skyline do 0-60 with it's twin turbo's??
Oh and to back up Dave, the 911 I saw last night was trying, believe me - the back end was squat on the tarmac. I didn't say I had him at all, just that I was surprised he didn't dust off quicker and had my car been running OK, then who knows

I was actually referring to the std spec (118hp) Elise which altho posts a 0-60 of mid-5's, has a uncharacteristically slow 0-100 figure. Guess my point was that 0-60 just shows one aspect of performance, maybe 0-100 is sometimes a more representative figure.
Once you start modifying cars, then anything's fair game, as proved by so many German tuners (Hamann, Koenig, TechArt etc). In the end, its comes down to your ability to fund it.

Zippy - I'm with you
Craig's car is special and we know it to be one of the fastest cars around - but there are very few scoobie tuned anything like as much as his. The scooby just isnt so easy to tune to very high levels. I know in a straight blast I am quicker than a carrera 2. I would love to think a few mods would make my car as quick as a 911 Turbo but I still dont think it's likely. I've driven one and it was astounding.
