Default How can you visually tell the difference between a JDM and UK spec?

Hey guys hope xmas went well for all and wishing you all a happy new year

Anyway im hunting round for my first scooby.

Iv viewed a 2005 sti type uk with ppp which i really liked, but all iv read seems to point me in the direction of a jdm model.

The car im viewing is supposedly a Jdm sti twin scroll. Its a blob eye on an 05 plate, (could be an earlier car as I think its imported)

What are the tell tale signs if any that it is the jdm model?

Are all JDM models equipped with a twin scroll turbo?

I believe JDM has a rear wiper and uk doesn't and also a higher rev limit on a JDM model over uk

JDM will have

Rear Wiper
Defi style Speedo Gauge cluster
Intercooler Spray bottle in engine bay behind the intercooler on the right hand side, Also Automatic AND Manual Spray
Yellow sticker on the B pillar when you open the drivers door, If it`s in Japanese=Import

These are the easy visual checks

It might me be a version 8 if its an import, The version 9 is a better car all round, easy way to spot this is the rear arches have a moulded lip on the later V9 models, Have a look at some UK cars on google pics to see the difference

MY03 onwards JDM has twin-scroll turbo as standard.

Most obvious sign of JDM is a rear wiper.

As the above mine has the rear wiper, the higher revving engine up to 8k. auto and manual intercooler water spray bottle located under bonnet as opposed to the boot,. mine has roof vent, dials that are red that swoosh on start up defi style with cdiff dial for dccd.
Stronger engine which comprises of nitrated crank, stronger pistons bigger valves.
twin scroll
good luck with the viewing pal

JDM models have the radio arial on the drivers side at the top of the A pillar, where as uk models are incorporated in the rear screen demister.

Nope, spec C has the ariel in the A pillar, JDM STi uses the rear screen.

If it's an 05 plate, it means it was registered in Japan in the period covered by the UK 05or could be newer, an earlier japan registered JDM car can't have a later UK plate because it was imported later, DVLA set the same rules as UK registrations, using the first registered date of the car in it's life, no matter where that was, as the basis to provide a UK number.

Based on that you cant use the reg number to date the car model, use the chassis number and the obvious differences between each MY, such as if it is a widetrack blobeye model with 114.3mm PCD wheels, then it's an MY05, narrow track Blobeye could be MY03 or MY04.

If it's a 2005 "blobeye" then they will both be 2.0ltr, many points above are correct but be warned don't assume anything, I.e alot of owners de-tango the headlights etc to uk cars, one thing which will stand out is the twinscrolls don't sound like a scoob they don't have that burble of the boxer engine. Chasiss code would be best bet, there were also some changes to the 05 model the later editions got a revised dash and the wider running gear with the pcd114
You should be able to tell as the rear arches have a plastic lip /'arch trim.

Have you got a link to the add or a few pictures if so pop them up so people can see and give you a more guaranteed answer

Easiest and quickest (as already suggested):

Should have a rear wash wipe
Clock clusters should be red back lit with 8k rev limit
Check VIN as this should read GDB-XXXXXX (a uk VIN is about 94 characters long! lol)
Should have AUTO and MANUAL water spray on the dash

If they loose paperwork then it goes on the date of registering in uk, registered a classic that came back on an 05 plate, always possible same could happen on a 2003 car

Electric folding mirrors, rear wash wipe, red instruments recalibrated to mph, auto intercooler spray and bottle under bonnet, rear tail lights on round section in tail lamp, rear privacy glass, indicator stalk on right and no Scooby rumble are a few differences. But also logbook should state when first registered in uk and service book and handbook will be in Japanese also no mirror on passenger sunvisor. If pre 2005 only the jdm will have Dccd Although I believe some jdm came without it as well.
