Unhappy

Coming back from the Big One on sunday and was having a bit of fun with(dc911 in his 22b and Dave in the black evo6)until the car started making a terrible noise.Managed to limp the car home but knew there was something major wrong.Found out the extent of the damage today, and to to cut a long story short it was a defective valve that has stuck open and basically knackered the engine.Subaru have never come across this before. The whole engine now has to be rebuilt,so the car will have a brand new engine in again.Which will mean a 1000 mile run in period. The car is a 2001 Y with 20k,but what I am concerned about is when I come to sell the car,do you think it will de-value it in any way.All the work is being done by subaru under warranty.I've only owned the car for 3 months and was just starting to enjoy it.

Wow mate...sorry to hear your woes....just as you've started to enjoy it eh

Amazing to think I've done about 25 hard track days in mine and not missed a beat

Luck I guess

Don't worry about the re-sale value etc....most will look at it as an advantage having a new engine in

Dya reckon Mellow?

I hope so, cause MY00 has just had 2 engine rebuilds (new short blocks), 1 for piston slap, and one for engine "failure" after the piston slap repair (ouch!)....

Dealer tells me the same as you, I hope so.....interesting as to what they'll do with the service history book....

Oh, and as a veteran P1'er whats your humble opinion on the STi7?

Lol...veteran...you mean OLD

Difficult one for me as so far nothing has come near my motor...but remember it ain't standard.

I had the good fortune to take a STi7 out on track and it just didn't feel comfortable...6 speed box didn't feel right...a very refined motor for sure...bit tail happy too....but all who have one are totally smitten...they do look gorgeous....

I'm just waiting for the next 22B....or P1 etc....there is something in the pipeline....we'll have to see

Chris,
Can you tell us what you know about this new 22B or P1.Is there something superduper coming along. Ive driven the new STI and although it is very good, it is no P1 and i am having trouble parting with my cash for one. I know there are all sorts of upgrades being developed by everyone, but i would rather buy something already tuned to death by Subaru even if it costs more. Any information would be appreciated. Regards, SIMON.

Sorry to hear about your P1 doesnt look like a common fault though and having a new engine wont do the resale any harm at all
As for the MY00's, i havnt heard of any with problems, the piston slap was suppose to have been irradicated with the phase 2 engine, but i suppose the odd problem will occure as no car is perfect saying that, there are also alot of MY97/98's that have never suffered from piston slap and are going strong so it could be a very minor defect in the manufacturing process

Thanks for the replys.Has anybody else any thoughts on this.I'm not after selling the car,I would just like to know how other people will look at it when I did come to sell the car.I would hope people would be of the same opinion as mellow and see it as an advantage. If you were after a p1 would this deter you?

Oliver, it would deter me personally - because I know that a Subaru dealer won't be as good at building engines as the factory. That's why it blew up after they rebuilt it the first time I would guess - they probably screwed up

jlanng as a subaru technician i resent that remark. i've rebuilt a fair few subaru engines including p1s of which some had new cranks and con rods so block splitting as well of which i have had no problems or comebacks and pride myself on being able to do it so it looks as though it has never been out.
a dealer ship should pride itself on keeping it's customers happy and making sure the job is 1st class.
i would rather a technician who does it to a 1st class job because his job and reputation relies on it than some jap who does a few nuts up and is not worried if it's right because it is on a production line and has to do a certain quota a day build an engine for me personally .

If being honest I had two identical P1's at the same price and I knew one had an engine rebuild, then Id choose the other every time.

Wouldn't worry about it. Bought a MY96 before Christmas from a local dealer with 83k on the clock and a new short motor fitted at 68k (shell bearing fault). Very happy as the car flies and my engine is only 15k old.

lol lol that is what happens when you race bikes . what is the problem with the car is it a new engine job ???????. came pass you real fast is the car standard ???? . would sujest if you rebuild you at least get steel rods and pistons arp bolts etc , if you go playing with fast cars and bikes like you did on sunday then another standard engine will pop and then its more money . save your self money now and get the engine sorted . get well soon evo 400 catch me if you can

Evo 400,that's some machine you got there.Yes it is a complete new engine, luckily it's all covered under warranty. It was a defective valve that caused the problem. The car is bog standard but have been thinking of getting it de-cated.Your mate seemed to be struggling in the 22b.It would have been nice if I could have carried on some more with you.Enjoyed the bit of fun we did have though.Did you manage to keep with the bike?
Had an evo6 before I got the p1,top cars.

Yoza don't worry I think I've just been very unlucky and lucky.Unlucky because of what happened and now I'm without the p1.But very lucky because it's covered by warranty and I'm getting a brand new engine.Only downside is the running in.
By the way subaru have never had this happen before.

Sorry, no. Just remember seeing it on Scoobynet just after the P1s came out. Dealer couldn't believe the engine had blown up if I remember correctly.
