Has the high cost of fuel ...
.... made you think about Subaru ownership?
I went to a Diesel Honda in June 2010 from an Impreza of 10 years .... not for fuel costs really, just that Subaru had lost ground and been left floundering with unsuitable products which no-one wanted anymore.
Now I see that Diesel is £1:34 a litre, so SUL would be about the same, I am relieved that I jumped ship when I did ......... I'm getting over 50mpg, but the cost still hurts.
At a mpg in the high teens/low twenties .... it would be unbearable!!
But, you couldn't even sell if you wanted to - no-one wants a gas guzzler these days ..... what do you do?
Are you about to jump ship?

I can still afford the scoob, so not jumping now...
But I'm sure an economical petrol is the way forward for those wanting to save money, as the gap between the cost of Diesel and petrol becomes ever greater.

Did we ever think we would see £1:34 a Gallon!?
To the poster above who thinks the diesel would be a disappointment - my diesel has 340Nm of Torque ...... it delivers on the fun scale every bit as much as an Impreza, but returns 55mpg. That cannot be argued against.

Not a problem, and only thing that should be powered by Derv are trucks, tractors, plant machinery and ships.
Anything else is a waste. As the money you "save" each fill up you`ve already lost buying it as they cost more. So unless your keeping for 10 years you`ll still have wasted more money than if you bought the petrol one. As I seriously doubt you do starship enterprise miles per year to warrant a Derv.

has the cost of fuel put me off owning a scoob? No.
has the high cost of fuel stopped me from commuting in the scoob? Yes.
bought a diesel too, best of both worlds

I've just had a Mailshot from Subaru UK - they say that they will absorb the increased VAT ...... I say that they cannot do anything else, they are not selling many are they?

The price of petrol really does not effect me greatly, I don't use the Impreza as a daily driver; my car is a weekend car and is used purely for pleasure.
My daily commute is around 110 miles to and from work but I have a company vehicle but if I ever take my car to work it costs around £25 in fuel costs.
I think if I did use the Impreza for the commute it would lose it's aura and become 'everyday' very quickly, but as it is I drive a diesel in the week and then when I jump in the Impreza at the weekend it makes you realise how special these cars are in terms of performance and handling.
I have to agree though with TX that Diesel is the fuel of the devil.
Nice to see you back as well in the General Section trolling away for Britain.

I think I'd rather sell a testi than my scooby!
I recently bought a ****ty old Nissan Almera to run around to work and back in. It does more than twice what the scooby does to the gallon. I've also found that I appreciate the scooby more when I drive it less

I don't regret buying my wrx diesel
Done 19 k miles with it and averaging 45mpg and up to 49 on longer journeys
Still have the classic turbo and gets 23-25 mpg yet the performance is identical and wrxd easier to live with day to day
A good remapped wrxd is the future of subaru
Yes I'll get the new STi 2011 modle next as my fun & weekend car but for day to day commuting the diesel is the way forward

I really doubt it delivers as much as an Impreza, especially when the Guv'nor kicks in at 5k and it's time for an upshift.
Personally, I bought my Impreza because it would be a fun car and it's made to be driven which in turn will burn fuel rather rapidly.
Besides, I have my lovely 1.1 for the commute to work - it is ****in awful!

Enjoy your space ship bud, would love one for everyday, but it's not enough for me as a fun tool.

Not everyone is cursed with being broke, i wont turn my post into an "i can afford" post but i had a BMW 530DSE, with 221bhp and 4 million nm torque. If you wanna endevour to tell me that diesel delivers the same amount of enjoyment as an Impreza then good luck, you have a very different level of "whats good" than i do.
Not only do i suffer 17mpg, but i enjoy £435 p/y in tax.
Clearly your a respected poster and i have respect for that, i'm sure you have more knowledge of scoobys than i could wish to have, but i wont appologise for not agreeing with you.
I have a 2007 supercar on my drive, that my kids can travel in (previously had a 911 Carrera 2s, that only 1 could, due to leg room), i can go shopping in, and i can leave most anything at the lights for ***** and giggles, and all the car asks of me is fuel.
Sounds not too un reasonable......if ya need to worry about fuelling a car, you have the WRONG car....you want fun...i had a Carlos Sainz Celica, SAAB VIGGEN, a NISSAN 300ZX twin turbo, A Skyline, a Porshe 911 C2S, a 530DSE and still i returned to a good ole STI Impreza.
With respect, SpecD

As a teen I paid £5 to fill my car, now a gallon costs more than that.
I bought a Scooby in '97, and I wasn't worried then, and I'm not now.
When I filled the car I bought whilst at school back in 1976, I earnt about a gallon an hour.
So till it passes £10 a gallon, it's actually more affordable now than 34 years ago.
Look at the bigger picture, I do sensible mileage so it doesn't bother me in the slightest. That's not to say I wouldn't mind 500 bhp and 50 mpg...

P.S. If I have to buy another car I'll have a Type-R in black, and/or a 22B please.

If you don't buy and enjoy a high performance car now, then in 5 or 10 years time you may not have the choice. That's why I'm prepared to put up with low fuel consumption for smiles per mile.
