I'm looking at purchasing an 01 WRX wagon with PPP but wondered what extra performance the Prodrive pack makes? Parkers states the car should have 221bhp standard.

I seem to recall that the power gains by adding PPP the 01 WRX were not as great as the 03-04 WRX due to a having different ECU. Figures of around 245-250 bhp and similar torque spring to mind.

I can't stretch to an STI which is a shame but the WRX PPP seems like the next best option.

The quoted figures of 261 are never really reached. On a bugeye wrx ppp, expect 240-250bhp - depending on where its rolling roaded etc.
In my opinion the issue might be down to a couple of things - general loss over time (wear etc to engine components - might lose 1 or 2 bhp per year?) or the fact that they didn't always make the 221bhp in the first place.... seem some come out at around the 215 mark.
But overall, if you don't plan to mod later - don't buy a wrx without the PPP. They don't cost much difference and they do pull and sound better than the standard car.
Watch out on the insurance though, specialists should be fine but the big companies will treat PPP as modifications as the car was sold without it (its normally fitted at the first 1500 mile service).

Had a WRX, the got the PPP fitted, now have an STI....i would highly recommended a factory PPP....if your looking at noticable gains but still getting peice of mind your car is intact and any dealer could repair it.....PPP is the way to go....However.....it is not a cheap thing to add (around £2k i think), but as you say, an extra 500 quid or so gets a WRX + PPP....WORTH IT>. IMHO.
