If you are not concerned with longevity, then the OE STi panel is as good.
I did quite a lot of research 2 years ago on this and found that it was generally regarded as worse than the WRX one which was as good as any other and much cheaper.
Another +1 for the STI panel filter not the cheapest but definately the best it is a service item though so needs replacing every 20k/2 years but gives the best filtration and ive seen great power gains on a standard (very tight engined, ie 1800 miles) spec c

I think you need to do a little more research:

Filtration is paramount, not a gain of c.2bhp.

I know what you mean Tim, you tend to get a little bit in the middle, and a nut hanging out either side. Neither effective nor aesthetic!

I think you are right. I wish I could remember where people were saying that on here as it doesnt look to be the case by what people are saying now.
For me, an aftermarket panel filter is an aftermarket panel filter. I cannot see how one can be far superior to another. The differences you feel (if any) when driving a car with an aftermarket filter will certainly be subjective.
I changed the standard panel filter to an aftermarket one on my V6 Ford Cougar years back. It made no difference to sound, performance or economy. What are they supposed to do on Imprezas?
K&N and others are reuseable, meaning that if you change your filter more regularly than the suggested 3 years, or keep the car longer than 3 years , its a cheaper option.
K&N will give slightly more induction roar then the standard filter.
Andy Forrest recommends K&N
Will it have a larger effect on turbos? I just havent seen or heard anything that makes me suggest it isnt a placebo. It 'felt' faster, it 'felt' louder etc.
