Default Best alloy rim cleaner ?

Done a search and there's nothing recent I could see, so could anyone recommend a good alloy rim cleaner to get rid of stubborn brake dust in corners, without damaging the rim.

Also is there an easy way to remove the black adhesive strips from old balancing weights ?

Cheers

Doh !
Sounds like elbow grease and wheel sealant then !
Thought there might be a magic spray to remove the stains/grot in corners

Thanks for the replies

Just noticed the ad on the right to

Seems worth a go at £3.27 until you add £7 P&P !!!

i used to use this but may be a bit harsh but never let me down

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wheels.../prod_104.html

now using this
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wheels.../prod_659.html

which is good for lightly silted wheels if left to dwell and aggitated properly.

my detailing friends use this
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wheels.../prod_499.html

which i'll be moving onto next i think but you need a spray bottle to use it with

and no matter which method you use remember to seal them after

Massive thanks guys.
Ordered some cleaner and sealer from cleanyourcar

Also had advice re: K&N oil filter this morning which is also ordered.

Thanks again guys - looking forward to receiving the cleaner and some decent weather to remove wheels and give them a spring clean

Thanks for the tip on clay bar - may try that later on.

PS 18"/8.5" Speedline Turino rims may be for sale later (STi hole pattern) - pics on my garage pics

You're right mate, when they get to a certain state you need acidic cleaners to shift it, pure and simple

Personally I'd go through cleaners from least to most acidic and stop when you find one that cuts the mustard. Once they are clean, seal them and clean weekly with some diluted shampoo (same as you use on the car) which is cheap and effective

You might find however, they are in need of a refurb, in which case some brick cleaner from Screwfix Direct can improve them until you can afford to get them re-done. Proceed with caution though!

Despite what people tell you, Bilberry is not that great on baked on brake dust, a quick search of Detailing World will show that. However it's a good starting product.

Thanks again guys.
Have noted suggestions and will see how the fairly mild (apparently) Bilberry works, then if necessary move up to stronger stuff.

I use wonder wheels, gets rid of anything on the wheels. I always make sure I give the wheels a very good powerwash after using it to get the acid off and then put some polish on there, always worked for me.

I got a bottle of this for Christmas from my Brother It's supposed to be top stuff, although I'm sure it's more for iron deposits and fallout than shifting brake dust

+1 wonder wheels......best i have ever used. I'm wierd about clean wheels, and i have found nothing as simple as this....Tried Simmoniz wheel cleaner the other day (xmas present), its red in a spray bottle. I'm telling you guys this, since even after i had rinsed the wheels thoroughily i drove to the end of the road, and could'nt stop at all. Coated the break disc in a film the likes i have never seen, truely could'nt stop, rolled into the main road, and got lucky.

Never known anything like it, death spray....did send a mail about it, was in Halfruads Simmoniz gift set. Be aware chaps.

I bought a second hand pair of alloys once, covered in tar etc. Just used Autoglym instant tar remover. If its ok for paintwork why not on wheels? It made short work of everything and left it perfect. Around £5 I think it was, now I use washing up liquid for normal cleaning (only for the wheels, werkstatt everywhere else). I used to use a sealant/wax but found they made no difference what so ever after a few days.
