LOL great answer. I'm sure as with everything its FAR from rocket science, or mapper would all arrive with NASA jackets, but and its a big but...you wanna be responsible for killing an engine for a cheap re map??

If you listen to half the people on this forum they would recommend you have a re map if you sit in a different style in your car!
I bet this site is a mappers dream.............

I know what your saying mate, but that one off cheap remap won't be cheap when you have to go back everytime you change a aspect of your engine, plus i think it would be a very useful thing to learn.

One would assume ECUTEK for example would charge someone a large amount of money for the software to be able to map, perhaps accompanied by a course of some sort, then that would be it, you have a franchised mapping business...of you go....mappers get great reputations by their own learnings i'm sure....you never (rarely) here of anyone doing a "cheapy" map for mates rates;....suks a bit...; for me who wants a cheapy remap

My advise to anyone who wants to go down that route would be....study as much as possible and log, log, log before attempting to alter any parameters. Make sure you understand how everything interacts and don't be afraid to ask questions on the tuning forums.
Its relativley easy to tune for more power at WOT but the hardest part (for me) was getting the driveabilty right. The thing is, you never really stop tweaking.
People have mentioned mapping their own car to save on costs, That was not the reason I did mine as it costs just as much as paying someone like Duncan to do it. By the time you have bought the Tactrix cable, Widband o2 and made your Det cans etc, you may as well have paid one of the Pro's. Its less fun though.

i fancy having a go at this too, i have mailed around asking q's and getting quotes on getting my z4 replaced and asked if i could have a cd of the sofware to which i was told i could for 85 notes(:-)) i think it was from one mapper. im thinking il watch as much as i can while the ecu is done and from then on il have a gentle tweak myself.
there is also a place called evoscan that does a cable/software for v1-2 imprezas u might like to look at.

You'll find that almost all ECU mapping professionals will have had to start somewhere and this would of almost certainly been on their own cars unless they were lucky enough to have been employed by a major manufacturer within this field. You'll also find that the good one's would have had a solid engineering background behind them which helps to visualise the developments within the engine as changes are made

Is ECU mapping as hard as Brain surgery then?

Anyone with the correct aptitude, facilities and time can learn how to map.
IMO.... to be good at something like this requires a person to have core aptitudes.
However.... knowledge and experience is key (like with most things we do), as with most "trades" to make you more proficient.
What person x knows after 2yrs say, may be no where near what person y knows after 20yrs. This does not mean that person x is anymore capable than person y..... but all things being equal, person y should know more and have a greater depth and spread of practical experience and knowledge.
If it interested me enough I would of looked at this years ago myself, but I can't be arsed so I pay someone else to do it. I know I would be more than able to, if I really wanted to.
If you want to give it a blast..... fill your boots and get stuck in!
Life is about learning and doing things that you couldn't do last week in my book.

Not quite, Martyn is the mapper, but we build engines as well, we can't lose!
Hey, go for it. I have no issue with anybody who feels like working on their own car, it's their choice. Unfortunately, there are a few who have a go at other people's as well, and charge for the privilege, despite having little clue.

Yeh skydiving off a chair......its not life or death.....Mappers/ tuners will be precious about "the holy grail" its thier income.....
What they do is take a map of your car, then take into a laboritory, work on it in a dish, under a micro scope, developing its greatness, before testing it on monkeys.....when satisfied it goes onto you car, and you have "the greatest map on earth", so good is it, you must post on the forums about its greatness.....ring any bells here>>??
Not rocket science, cant be, or joe average would'nt be doing it drinking tea, eating bacon rolls on a 3 year old lap top, now would he??....
Car mechanics also are at the top of the evolutionary ladder.
No offense intended there chaps, just cannot be "rocket science" in real terms. Knowledge is power, and no one wants to share it...
