Thumbs up Classic: just had a right job on with the door handle.

Last month my classic driver's side door lock was obviously getting "tired" so I bought a new one with the same key, from a dealer, (£42 for anyone who needs one, comes with one spare key with no chip, just a metal key.).

I removed the door card and took out the door handle bolts........or tried to. The furthest one in, the one that's a pig to get at, was rusted in place and the metal insert in the plastic door handle was just turning.

I bought a new handle from a scrapper and had it sprayed to match.

Today, having treated myself to some new doorcards, and it being sunny, dry amd warmer, I decided to grasp the nettle and see if I could get the handle off.

I spent a few minutes screwing the bolt and it's insert round and round in both directions to loosen it, then placed a screwdriver INSIDE on the handle inner face and knocked it. The handle came free, leaving the insert bolted to the door, as I expected.

the insert was then grasped with a large pair of Mole Grips, VERY tightly, and eventually freed off and unscrewed.

The new handle is now in place with it's threads well-greased

All doorcards done too. I've now got so I can remove AND replace a doorcard in under 5 minutes

Do you actually use the door locks much then?

I only used mine if I need to lock the car, with the windows slightly open, to stop the unltrasonic sensors setting the alarm off. But now I know how to turn off the sesnors, with the car still armed.

Classic 98, UK car: No fob-operated central locking, so I have to use the key. That's why the driver's side was "tired", the car is 13 this september.

Mine wasn't advertised with any such.

The stuff the japs took OFF the uK cars proabbaly kept THEIR prices low for years.
No aircon, £1000+ extra.
No folding mirrors.
No rear wash/wipe.
Not as good seats.
Warm instead of hot engine.
No DCCD.

Thieving little gits then charged us £4000+ MORE than the Jap cars

In 1997 a new STI Type-R import would cost you £27K

We mortals bought a UK turbo 'cos they were way cheaper.

My MY97 UK had a Cobra alarm supplied to it from new by the dealership (which was later replaced for a Toad ai600 as Cobra alarms are crap, or the remotes are to be precise).

Just as well really, as the factory chip-in-key immobiliser is a bit poo (its not even CAT3 certified, which kind of defeats the point of it).

No, mate, I keep meaning to upgrade, but have never got round to it.

Read loads about people parking near phone masts not being able to move their cars except by pushing, too

That only seems to happen to people if they don't know the PIN for the keypad. Thats the manual override.

Ah, OK.

I'll maybe get round to getting a fob-operated central locking done, I gather it needs a solenoid on the driver's door?

Anyone know if that has to be a Scoob one, or can it be generic?
