would you modify a car with 77k on clock?
hi,is it advisable to start modding a classic sti with 77k on the clock or is it asking for trouble?
full service history etc, runs nice, just had exedy pink clutch and new flywheel, but is it tempting fate to mod up to around 320 bhp on a type r with that sort of mileage on the clock?
last thing i need to be forking out for is a rebuild etc or are these jap cars good for it?
i was thinking of simtec etc.

TBH the classic STi's tend to blow up (sorry!) as when they were imported most peeps didn't realize they need 100ron fuel so were running them on 95 or 97 ... allow for a rebuild at some point as noted above

Personally what are you waiting for,77k on a 10+ year old car with fsh, should be able to take it easily .My 99 uk turbo with no forged botom end had 133k on the clock and went from 215 to 317 bhp and actually drove like it was built yesterday. If in doubt pm one of the mappers on here ,but i'am sure they will say the same + loads of people on here with V4/5 sti's mapped past 320 bhp Tony burns for one if i am not mistaken.

ive always filled it with v power since purchase.
with the cost of modding and a rebuild,i may just leave it standard as i cant afford a rebuild, that would be around 2.5k wouldnt it?

it does run superb and has full history,
its completely standard v4 sti type r with full oe exhaust and no mods at all,
it went on the rollers at alan jefferys producing 267/251.
i though that was a very healthy engine considering its 13 years old and only lost a few horses from the "quoted figures" from new.
280 ps i believe is 276bhp so loseing 9 bhp over 13 years running on v power seems pretty good?

End of the day plenty of people run high power throughout standard blocks and internals, I know of a few that has done 400 and have no issues same with the gearbox, they maintain it, treat it with sympathy so no drag starts of the lights, I ran my p1 for a year on a standard block around 340 of each with no problems. The issue is even a standard block can let go so you and I say this lightly there should be no reason that at 320-340 you should have any more worry then how it is now

Talk to Alan & Martyn, they will tell you how far to push it without killing it. At 77k it could live for a long time at the current power, or a much shorter time at a higher output. If it were mine, I would just get it mapped with a decent exhaust & filter. If the motor goes pop, get a second hand one from the sales section.

if i did modify, one of my hicups is that i need to keep the car extremely quiet,i dont like loud exhausts, the full standard system with both cats and oe sti backbox is just right,is it worth having a simtec and still keeping these in place? whats the best options to keep it quiet?

Stevie - the point I make is that the Ver V / VI STi's do tend to "go" so best budget for the worst case IMHO ie whether the OP upgrades it or not ... the engine in my STi V did "go" after all - it was imported to UK as new too

My 1995 wagon was unmolested when I got it at 70k, 320bhp and similar torque 8k miles later,I need a new gearbox Can't stress enough how tight and minty my wagon was. Engine is fine but the transmission gets tired and the last thing it needs is more stress. Oddly enough as the clutch ages the stress becomes less, I think it's no coincidence that the newly biting and completely awesome exedy pink helped it on it's merry torque stripping way
