Welcome and good luck
Reminds me of me a few months ago when i was on the hunt
The more you look the more you find out about each model and year etc
I was only after a Turbo Uk Impreza but ended up with a sti Prodrive

For 6k you should be able to pick up a decent version 4 car, you may be able to pick up a higher mileage version 5 (much higher mileage normally ) so its either a version 3 or 4 that will get you what you want for 6k.
Down sides are that the version 3/4 STI's (along with all the other MY97/98 cars) dont have a mappable ecu, so you have to add that to any costs (1200 quid), the gearboxes are weaker on the pre 99 models (though the 99/00 cars boxes still suck), so people do one of 2 things, upgrade the box internals (ppg/scoobyclinic gearsets) which will set you back anywhere between 4-5.5k for a build, or go for the 6 speed box that you get in the new age cars (circa 2.5k 2nd hand).
Then there is the engine issue, its not that strong, 350bhp is about as far as you want to go if you want reliability, so you have some options on a rebuild, either stick with the 2ltr, go 2.1ltr, 2.2 (if you can get a block) then up that to 2.33/2.35ltr, probably the most expensive option but also the best real world setup, or 2.5 (though you still have to build/liner the 2.5's as the blocks are weaker than any of the others).
The STI type R's dont have ABS, also something to watch for, these will need the brakes upgrading (4/6pots min), and a new clutch, so really if you want one your best either getting something as a project and building it up (go see Daz's cheap 450+bhp type R build in the projects area) or just go for a new age car and run 430bhp on the somewhat stronger engine/gearbox etc that these cars come with.
