Bought a 'standard' WRX recently and am now starting to wonder if it is. I was told by the dealer apart from the exhaust it was a completely standard car. Having had an Sti in the past I was keen to buy a WRX I my understanding was these would happily run on normal unleaded petrol 95 RON as the nearest Super garage is about 30mins away and it was starting to get on my nerves.
Anyway went to fill up this morning and noticed a small sticker inside the flap stating min 98 RON. The sticker doesn't look like a 'Subaru' sticker but I could be wrong and I have found it the car is a parallel import from Malta. Can someone tell me is 95 correct in a WRX, did they come with these stickers as standard and if not is it possible a previous owner has molested it somewhere and whoever upgraded it put a sticker in the fuel cap?
Not sure how I feel either way.

I forgot to mention according to the paperwork the exhaust is a HKS silent high power exhaust which was fitted together with a HKS panel filter if that helps. Surely these two elements alone wouldn't constitute 98 RON but might suggest someone previously had it remapped hence a 98 sticker? Would 95 do any damage or just not give you the performance the car had been molested to produce?
Getting worried now.

I believe in malta they struggle for 98 as area 52 did a 500+bhp build for a guy from there to run on 95 i believe and they were sucssfull in achiving those figures if my memory serves me right..
you could always buy some octain booster and put that in to compensate which works just fine as i had to do this on a trip through europe and did so for about 5000 miles without any det and still was able to use all my ponies.
or get it mapped on 95ron i think its just a case of retarding the timing a little but dont take my word for it im sure one of the mappers could help with info simon aka jolly green giant or smt like that seems to be very helpfull

I onced owned a 53 Wagon and the dealer I bought it from told me it ran on normal unleaded so never thought any different. Did anything change between 53 and 05 or was I given duff info? Wish I had bought an Sti now! Anyone recommend a specific octane booster can't imagine they sell it in our local garages perhaps ebay is the best bet?

Mines an 05 parallel originally from Malta and mine says minimum 98.
I've had 3 scoobys and always use super as can't see the point in compromising for the sake of a few quid and would always feed her the good stuff.
Having never used 95 I've no comparison but I would always use the better stuff...

Believe me if I had easy access to Super I would use it but it's miles away and one of the reasons I stepped down but now it looks like it's bitten me in the a***

I have a 2005 wrx from malta and has a sticker stating 98 ron. I used 95 for 3 years with no problems. it's now 285 bhp and can still run on 95 ron but when possible use 99 ron.
