Default Is anyone running 50+% methanol?

I'm currenty running a 20% mix if meth, what are the pros and cons of increasing the mix? My injectors are almost maxed out at the moment, will increasing the percentage of meth require larger injectors?

Thanks
Harry

Don't think there are many gains if any to be had from running any more than a 20-25% mix

Also the higher the mix, the worse it is on fuel lines, fuel tank and injectors o rings. Something worth bearing in mind when using it on a road car.

Good point. Although if like Banny says if you're gonna be paying out for corroded fuel lines, injector seals etc etc in the long term the gains are gonna be out of the window anyway

I live around the corner from a shell pump so wouldn't be carrying any in the boot plus I've got the v-power map on the simtek to fall back on

I've noticed that quite a few people have been asking this same question.

Is there an issue here with Tax avoidance? i.e. are plod going to take a dim view of this.

I imagine it's the same question around using chip fat in a diesel, did they not have to legislate to allow it?

You pay vat when you buy meth so no tax avoidance fella, Harry it will eventually go through the fuel tank too. Happened to me and I did not realise until I had the car on the ramp for some other work, this was at only 10%.

Hi Harry

upgrade your fuel lines injecter rings speak to your mapper and go for it, who knows might be some gains proberly not as significant as 20% but give it a try and let us know how you get on.

is it still on a standard motor?

might be worth contacting Duncan Dynamix, he was running E85 and think he switched to methanol because the ethanol source started to dry up.

I ran 50% meth.

Didn't feel any better than 20% and has strange separation results from what I saw but that could gave been q bad batch of meth maybe

Wouldn't recommend it really.

Have played with a few combinations and percentages.

Beyond 20% there is little gain if you treat it like petrol with an additive, at 50% I found you have to treat it like tuning meth just not as good meth as it is watered down in effect.

So all tuning needs rethinking and done looking at the basics from a different angle and using egt to find afr target rather than just going with normal petrol / meth mix.

I have seen no down sides but not run more than 20% meth longterm enough to be sure.

you may pay vat on the meth your buying, the same way you pay vat on parrafin or rebated diesel (red diesel) vat isnt the issue its road fuel duty that your avoiding and if you get caught be prepared for heavy conscquences and that will include you car being seized, Its just as illegal as using red diesel....
try buying fuel grade methanol from a fuel supplier and youll get a shock that £125 for a 45 gallon drum of "cleaning fluid" becomes £500+ for the same stuff when its sold as motor fuel

also the air fuel ratio of pure meth is way more than normal petrol, l you can burn almost 2.5 times more methonal for the same amount of air ,
20% probably dont change your mpg much, pure meth will dramaticaly change your mpg so the bennefit of being cheaper if you take a chance and use cleaning fluid is non existant

af ratio for petrol is 14:1
af ratio for methanol is 6:1

Why not run water injection, the latent heat of evaporation of the water should allow more advance / boost for the methanol / fuel mix you have in the tank

It's expensive and there are no fuel savings which is probably why it's not popular. It's effective in knocking down charge temps.
Rough costs would be £600 for the kit + £200 for a suitable water tank i.e. Spec C boot tank and then 6+hours for fitting + re-map.
Normal application is to run 50/50 water/meth but I hear some run up to 20/80% for more power.
