quick question bout gearbox ?
hi all , what kind of power can my standard 2002 wrx gearbox handle ?
thinking of maybe getting a forged re-build so i can aim for 400bhp in the near future by upgrading my turbo and fueling . but if my gearbox will need upgrading i might think of changing cars thanks for reading

Get the sti mate. The money you're going to spend tuning the wrx you may as well get the sti. at least when you drive it you won't be scared of something breaking. just a remap on a sti will get you circa 330 bhp. why upgrade to an sti intercooler, sti pink injectors on a wrx when the sti has them standard.
some wrx gearboxes take 350 bhp and similar torque, but they eventually break unless you really drive like a granny.
i broke my bugeye wrx gearbox at 265bhp/240 torques.
i was going to mod my wrx to 340/350 bhp, i had all the mods ready when my gearbox let go. i replaced it and sold the car and then sold all the mods i had bought for it too. I then bought a 2005 blobeye sti and am really happy with it, it's just another ball game.
Standard engine and gearbox on the sti are good for 450 bhp.
If you do buy one then try to get a later one with the dccd and the wider track etc.

It makes me feel a bit spoilt really, a lot of people say "get the STi", and I got one as my first Scooby, not really knowing what I was buying.
I'm VERY glad I got one now though, as otherwise I know I'd be constantly thinking "But what if I'd got the STi..."
Defo get one rather than upgrade yours mate

The problem is that most people don't know that it's NOT power that destroys a gearbox, it's TORQUE.
Which is the reason why if you upgrade to a 2.5 litre engine, you will need a 6-speed box if you do any mods, since they produce masses of torque.
I was told 350 ft lbs was enough, any more and get a different box.

i know sti is the way forward . but , i have spent too much time ,blood sweat and tears gettin my wrx to wot it is now , and im very proud of it i just cant get rid of him
i like the idea of havin a high spec wrx that ive customized rather than an sti . i know they are faster and better in many respects but my scoob has been built to my taste and its a bit different from the norm which is wot i believe modifying is all about . guess i just hav to b prepared to get sti box in future !! sti the right thing to do , but im just a sucker for punishment
