What car have you got.........the TD04 of the WRX doesn't normally cause boost spikes with the de-cat.
The bigger turbos of the STi can cause a problem though if de-catted..

Same car as mine then.........just go ahead and fit it
The ECU will still throw in the correct amount of fuel for the air going in etc so there will be no increase in BHP. The noise will change and you will get a bit earlier boost but given the small turbo size no problems with boost spikes.
Then save up for an open source remap which I think is about £350 at the moment

STi7 bugs do not like de-cats...........the larger VF turbo spools up earlier and the increase in boost isn't controlled adequatly by the ECU and can boost spike. In the olden days people drilled out the restrictor pil but nowadays it's very simple to get the ECU re-mapped.
You have to be a bit careful with boost if you change the exhaust and drive like a grandad until re-mapped LOL

I ran a sports cat on my 2004 WRX for 12 months before I had a remap. It ran fine, although as someone has already said you aren't getting the most from it. But I was like you - modding my car in stages and didn't want the expense in one hit. I think it's more of an issue if you do the uppipe too due to boost spike ( though as posted the TD04 is not that bad ). I just kept my eye on the boost gauge and then got the remap as soon as I could afford it.

Yeah a good ideas to wrap keeps the temp lower under the bonnet and will help come mot time, you want to do it before its fitted tho as it would be a right bugger to do if all ready on the car.
If you do wrap, do the whole the down pipe not just the cat it will also get the gases out faster.
