Default 350BHP ATW on stock turbo ?

Chatting to an American from one of the bases who said his mate had a US spec Hatch and was running 350 BHP AT THE WHEELS on a stock turbo, which must be 430 ish at the flywheel (?)
I thought that was a bit high as I didn't think the std turbo would flow that much air. Said he was on 750cc injectors and 20 odd (!?) psi boost.

Any experts like to comment ?

Think the hatch uses a VF49?? They can make up to 400Bhp ish @ the fly. No more than that from memory. Best not to forget that america has dog **** fuel as well which certainly wouldn't help figures.
Maybe the american's use a different way of working out the ATW figure??? Mine makes 351Bhp @ the wheels on a MD321T and supporting mods.

The Americans also use a different type of HP figure which is calculated slightly differently from the European / World standard calculation, so typically their cars will appear to be around 10% more powerful.

Ask your Yank mate to stick his car on a dyno over here and I think he would be surpised at how 'powerful' his car really is.

Their ATW figures are very odd indeed..

Their reply when questioned about silly figures is "your mappers in the UK must suck."

I get the feeling that their dynos must read the figures with about 10% drivetrain losses where they should be about 20%odd. That is the only way to get their figures to make sense.

Just remembered this

Thanks for the replies guys.
I was assured the figures were right, so with different stock turbo to ours (didn't realise) and variations in RR set-ups/HP sizes I can see how it could be "possible".

Thanks again.

Same turbo VF 48 - maximum 370 +/- bhp at fly - "some say" 400 possible with 'meths' (still at the fly).

Maybe he got lucky - but with their crap fuel surely he 'means' 350 at the fly (makes sense)

I think you will find that US fuel isn't too shabby, their octane rating is different. Their 95 ron is roughly equivalent to 100ron in our rating.
The americans seem to make crazy power from the stock turbo, but you should always look at their stock power to compare. Most of them you will see an increase of around 70bhp over stock with the right mods. With 100ron fuel that sounds about right I would guess.

At least I am better informed now, so when I bump into him next I can quiz him a bit more and try to determine the amount of bullsh1t quotient he's giving (or not)

And about the dynos

Germans have it different too, and now all of the car dealers in this country use PS (Pferdestärke , which literally translates as horse power) since its higher then BHP, and looks better.
