Default Buying advice 2003-2005 blobeye

I'm a brand new member I come from a nissan / drift background. So subaru's are new to me

Right been looking for a few weeks there is a huge market I've seen wrx with forged engines running close to 400hp to stock STI type uks

I want around 350-400 hp.

So I'm not sure what to do I've found one car I really like a 2004 wrx STI type uk with a few engine mods running around the 360 hp mark has full service history, coilovers, defis, ect but the millage is a bit high 61,000

Would something like this be ok or lower milage to better?
Anything I should look out for?
All advice is appreciated.

Thanks..

My main piece of advice. Go for a Japanese (JDM) STI not a UK STI. A better car all round than the Type UK. I owned a Type UK and always wish I'd bought a JDM.

Ring Gary Moulson at Keith Michaels he will half your insurance on a JDM

JDM, more power out of the box, stronger internals, DCCD and that's just for starters. Do a search within the forum.

As above, try Moulson for your insurance. I can't see a JDM being double though mate.

not being funny but a type UK sti should be fine at 350bhp on standard internals, if you are happy with that then really is it worth the extra premium for a JDM. Also 61k is not really high mileage, infact its lower then it should be based on the average for a 2004 car.

'SHOULD' be fine..... A JDM car WILL be fine, thats the difference.
I do agree on the mileage thing though, 61000 isn't high as long as it's been maintained correctly etc.

JDM cars aren't that much more expensive anyway to be honest, why start with a lesser car when for a few hundred quid more you could have a JDM.
That's just my opinion anyway. If you only want a standard car and more power doesn't concern you then yea, UK will do the job, but when that tuning bug strikes there is no stopping it, lol

The other point ofcourse is that you will see 350 a hell of alot easier in a JDM car than in a UK one.
Exhaust, 3 port, filter and a map. And that's all you need.

you can achieve 350 with the above on a UK variant though. and pretty much run safely on standard internals, you can always use the argument it SHOULD be stronger but nothing is guaranteed, not even on a JDM car.

I agree they are better specced but for what the OP is wanting a UK version sounds to me the better option cost wise.

I will get a quote off Keith Michaels thanks.

The one I'm looking at has 361hp @20psi type UK has scooby clinic remap ECU TEK
all the extras I was looking for its up for £8700 seems to be very well looked after.

But 20psi does seem high?

So the worst comes to the worst how much would a rebuild start from?

20psi isnt that much now, 1.4 bar or so?, price seems quite alot though for that, i would maybe knock a grand off that price for that year/mileage/spec

rebuild could be anything from 2k upwards depending on how much you want to spend and how much power you want.

might well do that with a good launch on a good day to be honest.

i think its overpriced, you can pick up similar spec 03 sti's for around 7 - 7.5k now....

I will have to look harder .

Am I right in thinking you don't get DCCD in the blobeye?
Are there many faults even if they are small to look out for?

I think the later version of blobeye 2005 version may have came with this, or the later 2005 versions but dont quote me on that, some of the other members will confirm that.

check the car throughly, make sure its cold when you check it, no smokes , rattles bangs etc. i would say good service history is a must. Also maybe check things like brakes/tyres etc as if they are low then can knock a few quid off.

That's the worst piece of advice I've seen in a while! You should at least try A-Plan and Sky as well. Gary Moulson couldn't get mine below £1000 (2004 JDM STi, 30, 5yrs no claims, 2 claims/5 yrs). A-Plan insured me for £840, all mods covered like for like + protected no claims.

no fella as people have said make sure it has service history etc ive had it over a year and have had no problems at all but the jap spec is just a superior car better engine turbo gearing dcd auto intercooler spray rear wiper.
they are more or less the same price for a better car.
i think you may find some people on here are biased towards the cars they own, some people even like bugeyes!!!( joke before abuse starts )
this is coming from a uk spec owner
