As far as I know the OS community haven't 'cracked' the ECU in your Impreza, so your only options are an Ecutek remap or an aftermarket ECU such as Simtek, Syvecs, Gems etc.
I know probably the cheapest option would be the Ecutek option, I'm not too sure if any daughterboard options such as ESL are available for your ECU but perhaps someone with more knowledge can clarify the matter.

On OpenECU forum some guys tried open source remap on classics http://forums.openecu.org/viewtopic....=192&start=225
But on classic i would recommend go for used Simtek rather than EcuTek due Ecutek don't have Mafless feature etc.
ESL Daughter board is second option, which have Mafless too and not sure if 2 fuel maps.

Before you go upping the power on a UK car think about the upgrades you'll need first, fuelpump, injectors, turbo, filters and exhaust. Plus of 300 bhp and standard bits will start to go bang. You'll need some serious mods to go beyond this and only then will you start to require a newer/better ECU.
Go JDM from 99/00 and you can see 350 bhp with very few mods.

I think most, if not all, of the open source software comes from the states. As they didn't have the GC8 Impreza there hasn't been much demand for someone in the open source community to add the JECS to the list of compatible ECU's. People have reverse engineered the M32r, JECS and reflashed their own ECU, but they are just not willing to share with the open source world.
So only options are commercial remapping software such as Ecutek, which you have to pay a licence fee for as well as the mapping fee. Or swap to aftermarket ECU, Power FC, Simtek, Syvecs etc...
Power FC's are pretty old now and I wouldn't put one on unless I got it at a good price as, unless you can do it yourself, you have fitting and mapping costs to add to purchase cost. Simtek price includes fitting and mapping.
