type r vs JDM bug sti
hi everybody, thinking of px my v3 type r sti with a JDM bugeye sti.
My car has a stainless exhaust , newage brembos ,apexi ecu running 1.3 bar boost. Is it worth doing a straight swap. The Bug is a standard car.
Thanks

Important question and don't listen to the heaters of the look of the bugeye but do you like its looks?
2nd question, do you plan on running or tuning the type r to a high'ish state of tune say 400-450?
Reason I ask is, firstly don't buy a car you don't like as you will regret it but more importantly if you do like the looks and want to run higher power the jdm sti is a great starting point, you have the brembo already fitted, a 6 speed box that is solid and can take some serious power and the engine is seen as one of the strongest fitted out of the factory and had better pistons, rods and crank that people run well over 450 in it, so its tuning potential is right up there,

cheers Guv atleast some people are looking at the bigger picture, and other then the looks the jdm sti bugeye is a better car then the type r
it comes down to you either love it or hate, most hate it so please dont let that put you off, 90 out of 100 people will say keep the type r as they hate the look of the bugeye
look at frayz build thread his bugeye looks as good as any type r i have seen
if you like the bugeye then i would say do it

I agree from a tuning aspect the bug eye would be the better bet, BUT, if you don't see yourself pushing for 400 then the Type R is your best bet.
As things stand,
Your classic will be faster, more thrilling to drive and most of all look 100 times better.
Keep the classic, spend a few quid on her to see 350 ish and your thoughts of swapping her will be long gone.

I'd go bug
I own a bug and bought a type R v5 sti for a friend. Driving them on country roads and motorways I prefer the bug.
Ride is more comfortable and feels more planted on the road. Type r just felt rough.
Less rattles from the bug and now that mine is running 370 it's great fun to drive
The looks grow on you... And worst case, it's relatively cheap to change it to blob or hawkeye.

From: 1600cc's of twin scroll fun :)
Speak with Rickya, he did the JDM hawk to sti type R (ive got both a JDM Spec C and a V5 STI type R), you wont like the type r going from any twin scroll new age tbh, well wont like is a little harsh, more like disappointed.

Thanks for all the replies guys,i know the type r looks better but the bug has wide arches and its easily tuneable, for me to get 400 bhp from my car i would have to spend serious money but with the bug i wouldnt have to spend that much.I have left my no with the person selling it he was suppose to ring back but he hasnt .I have to go and see it ,its in Leicester and iam in Leeds.

As long as the bugeye is running right I think you'll be impressed with it.
I have a JDM bugeye sti and it is an excellent car for stock.
I've had a few type r's over the years and the jdm bug sti is better in every way except visually but that's a matter of opinion . It's faster, has much better brakes, it's more reliable, more tunable, better chassis, better interior, etc.
I was genuinely suprised at how quick mine is (unless I've got a 'good one') previous to this one I had an evo 6 and that was running about 310bhp and my sti feels quicker than the evo. I've had lots of quick jap motors so I'm not a newb to them, I even did a 2.5 drop in on my last sti type r, added td05 20g and all the supporting bits. Obviously that was faster but I've not been in any stock'ish classic that performs as well, whether it be sti ra, type r, p1 or whatever. I guess the uk ones are probably slower like most of the stuff we get, aren't they 260bhp? From cars I've had dyno'd in the past I'd say my bug sti is pushing easily 310bhp with wr1 downpipe and prodrive rear section.
The looks divide opinion but I love mine. I think the sti looks better than the wrx with it's darker headlights etc.

I would go for bug over Type R
I've owned a V4 Type R, JDM blob 370/360 as well as quite a few other import STi's (am settled with a STi classic wagon - but am going to bug soon)
For weekend/blatting the Type R was more fun, by a fair bit. The JDM just did everything too well, and you had to do silly speed to get it playing.
The Type R just loved being ragged and was eager for it. Power to weight was very good. However on a longer run with its short gearing, it was fatiguing, where the JDM was mind blowing at dispatching cross country distance. It was the better daily driver, more reliable as well as having easy tuning potential, but I think the biggest criticism when comparing was weight - new age are lardy, especially comparing to a Type R which is more lively
The owner of my local bike shop went from a Porsche which did everything a little too well to a Type R and is very happy, but he wanted max thrill factor. It all depends on what you wnat
