Worried - Coolant Smell
Hey to all, car is a MY99 Turbo 2000
Bought it a few weeks ago, but noticed when the car is nice and warm, when looking under the bonnet, or standing next to the closed bonnet, it smells like it is burning coolant so to speak, i've checked the level and it seems fine, but it still worries me.
I've got a couple of ideas, but don't know for sure.
1. Its a normal smell due to the age of the car.
2. Something is broke.
3. No idea.

Check very carefully the end tanks of the radiator, they are prone to split on the plastic ends after many years. Best to have it warm and shine a torch down from above looking down the end tank (usually go at the front)
If it is that, no real pannick as rads are about £40.

my mate did reckon there was a drip onto the exhaust pipe at the front of the engine, but i couldn't see anything. What is there if the rad is fine? plus is an STi rad better than a Turbo 2000 one?

When the engine is hot, lift the bonnet and listen for the distinct sound of coolant leaking onto the exhaust. I had this on my old Blob 03 plate, which was the water pump seeping. Part replaced as it neared 36 months, together with a lovely new cambelt free of charge...
