Exclamation Speed Limits to be Reduced

There is a lot of talk now about lowering speed limits to reduce the demand for fuel.

70 down to 55, 30 down to 20, 40 to 30 and 50 to 40 ... sounds sensible I suppose?

Wasn't there a post on here a while back suggesting that motorway speed limits were to be increased?

Cars are getting safer, and they are much more economical (well, some of them...), so no reason why speed limits can't be increased in certain places

agreed. I religiously stick to speed limits through towns and built up area's, but I have followed cops down the motorway before doing 80-85, and no one cares. except speed camera's...

Spain has just introduced it, or is about to - as part of the cost cutting measures ... we may follow suit.

if it drops below 70 i will have to stop using 6th and drive everwhere in 5th
how does that save fuel
turning off red lights in favour of flashing amber after midnight would save more fuel

I can see the logic involved. Almost all cars will have a better efficiency at 55 than 70. But who in their right mind would rather travel on the motorways at 55 instead of 70?

Aren't limiits being dropped due to catching people speeding I know loads of places where limits have dropped and cameras appear. I know they say they aren't on but would you take a chance ?

I am actually starting to notice people driving slower on the motorway, believe it or not I was pulled over this week for doing between 70-75mph on the M40! When asked if I knew why he'd pulled me over I didn't have a clue at that speed

I think that's a ploy to lure ppl into getting caught. I know someone got points for doing 32 in a 30. I thought they were having me on until I saw the ticket.

There's a road near me that has had those priority traffic calming measures for years.

But some bright spark has now decided to do away with them. Install speed bumps and drop the limit to 20.

Its a long straight road, seems like it takes forever to drive along it now.

32mph would be about 35mph on the speedometer though, unless the car has been fitted with smaller diameter tyres.

Everyone round here is in the 40mph club. Their rules/limits are as follows:

NSL A-road; 40mph.
NSL 70mph Dual-carriageway; 40mph,
Residential road; 40mph,
Past a school; 40mph. Ignoring the lollipop lady, side swipe her sign and drive over her feet
Approaching a 30mph speed camera; slow to 20mph
Approaching a 40mph speed camera; Slow to 30mph
Approaching a 50mph speed camera; Slow to 40mph
Approaching a 60mph speed camera; carry on at 40mph
Speed bumps; Slow to 0.40mph
Slight hill on a NSL road; slow from 40mph to 30mph. Slow to 20mph to change down a gear.
Downhill section of road; Ride the brakes for the entire duration of the hill. NEVER exceeding 40mph.
Motorway; 50mph and stay in the middle lane.

The speed I fly past these bunch every day on teh dual carriageway is ridiculous. I feel like I'm speeding when in fact I'm doing a legal 70mph in 6th gear whilst they are meandering at 30-40mph and probably still in 3rd or 4th. I just need to make sure one doesn't meander into lane two because they need to prepare to turn right at the next roundabout in 4miles time.

yeah whatever ! it would cost considerably more to change all the road signage than what it would actually save in fuel, anyway the more fuel we use the more ££ the gov make from us on the fuel duty! do you really believe they want us to use less fuel ?
