Car goes in tomorrow to investigate the following:
4 month old battery completely dead.
Car starts with a battery pack, no alternator warning light showing, however at start up it illuminates to show it functions.
An hour after switching the car off, it starts again.
Left overnight the battery is dead.
Battery has been checked and is charging and holding its charge.
Car is always run with the fan on and generally heated window in the mornings too. It does a lot of short journeys, however the first battery lasted me 4 years and I only fitted a new one as a precaution.
There was no gradual decline, no symptoms. Simply wouldn't start on Sunday afternoon and battery has been draining rapidly ever since .
Its the correct battery for the car.
2005 WRX. No electrical mods or ICE
So put your money on the nose, what do you reckon is causing the drain.
There's a virtual pint and a chaser in it for the winner

in what way have you tested have you just tried tightening them or actually tried to pull them off the only other things it could be is a dodgy earth or starter motor staying open draining the battery

No Tracker.
Just been out to it and it started straight away. Been stood for 30 hours. Its been under cover today the last 2 days it was parked in the sun at work when it died .
I've discovered is that the kids climbed into the boot through the ski hatch the evening before it died. It started the following morning but was dead 10 hours later.
I Checked the connections in the boot eg the aerial booster and made sure it was properly secured. Boot light goes off.
I'm even more confused now. I've tried pulling the cables from the terminals. They're well attached.
One other thing I've recently noticed is I can very faintly hear the starter motor through the speakers when the engine is first started. Would this suggest possibly a poor earth from the starter motor? I cleaned that area of the engine a few days ago , but only with a watering can to rinse it off.

Common problem on Imprezas. Some pointers below. The cold weather over winter won't have helped and short journeys are a killer. I would get a high amp/hour rated battery and drive the car more, there is probably no fault.

If the car has only been used for short journeys, its possible they gave you a half charged battery (does happen if its been sat on a shelf for over a year unchecked). 4 months of short journey abuse will quite easily knacker it completely, as its probably partly sulphated anyway...add some more sulphation, and you end up with a shorted cell(s) (buckled plates, as mentioned above )
Parsitic losses are easy to check; Disconnect one lead of the battery ( thats been fully+properly charged, of course ) and place an Ammetre between the battey lead and terminal. Make sure everything is off (inluding interior lights) and measure the current draw.
Keep it connected for a while and take a reading every 10 minutes to get a good average. Take that average reading, convert it to amps, check the battery's Ah rating, and divide the current draw by the battery's Ah capacity. The result is how many hours a FULLY charged battery will last until it is almost flat. Halve it to and idea of the real world worst-case figure (which would be more typical for a car used for short journeys).
A current draw above 0.1amps would raise suspicion (boot light, alarm, radio, ICE amps/aerial amplifier, tracker, immobiliser etc).

I drove it with the headlights the last time I used it and 30hours later it started??
