Lightweight Flywheel a mob worth doing
I am doing a clutch and gearbox change on my 1994 ra, was wondering if its worth having the flywheel machined to 8kg as i hear this is the best weight to have your standard flywheel at. I spoke to a machine shop which is pretty good local to me and they said that when you machine flywheels it can sometimes cause vibrations, i asked him if he could balance it but he said he would need the crank with the flywheel to balance the complete unit. Has anyone had there standard flywheel machined would be very grateful to hear peoples feed back.

If you were to buy a Lightened Flywheel as a direct replacement, would you take the crank out??!? Im not sure On skimming your flywheel to 8kg, but lightweight flywheels are generally a different grade metal to OEM, and in some instances with weight saving milled holes. By skimming a flywheel down I would imagine you are weaking the structure which could cause it warp and/or crack. This is of course just my opinion, im sure someone with more knowledge will soon be on to assist.
