Paul Doyle's new Time Attack engine.
Completed and now delivered, Paul's shiny new engine for his KSport backed Time Attack car. A fresh stroker motor from Enginetuner, using the EJ22 block, it promises to keep Paul moving forward in the series. This is not a big cheque book project, very much being a group effort, assisted by Lateral Performance, who generously stepped in with Crower rods and Wiseco pistons along with their latest camshaft choice. The heads have been extensively reworked by Enginetuner's Rob Baird, including a total rebuild of the previously heavily cracked combustion chambers. The task included a great deal of hand fettling, taking a whole week's work to complete.
Enginetuner would like to acknowledge Paul's single minded dedication to the Time Attack series, despite the considerable cost and effort involved in operating at this level. We are delighted to be able to offer assistance.
The car, as featured in Banzai magazine.

The spotless detail, carried on throughout;

Sounds awesome. Was the EJ22 engine ever used on a production car by Subaru ie post 22B? How are they obtained new?
And what's hand fettling? Would have thought nothing could be done with cracked combustion heads?

I still think it could do with a good scrub!

Rob drills into the heads, removes the seats and takes the material down below the area of cracks. He then welds the heads, building up the fresh surface. He then machines the heads, and replaces the seats. It's major surgery with no MRSA! The ports are opened up, new guides fitted and seats blended in. The result should be a stronger head which flows a lot better.
As below, when arrived
And now finished.

Apologies Alan, RCMS is the only place that I can ever find a price on EJ22 casings.
Nice to see a team effort.

All machining and assembly done by my staff on my premises. We have two full time machinists and builders. My view is that the man who machines the engine builds the engine, ensuring continuity of care from start to finish.

Looks very pretty. Did you guys get a job lot of silver paint Well done with the build.
Paul's original 743BHP Zen built engine, was running Laterals custom 2.35lt engine parts, and after seeing the great results he got last year, we wanted to help out with his new engine.
When it comes to power/reliability/& winning performance, the 2.35lt is hard to beat, as seen in all 4 of the 9 second cars at the Scooby Shootout, and dare I say Laterals own "Banana", that showed how versatile the 2.35lt is, by taking 1st, & 2nd in the handling too !
We also carry the EJ22T blocks in stock, but we do only sell them to customers buying our engine parts, because they are getting so hard to find now.
Fingers crossed for Paul to have a fantastic season.
Mark.

Certainly the EJ22 closed deck blocks are the ultimate answer, proven by the great results from these engines.
We find the silver a distinct improvement on the usual corroded alloy!
We're certainly hoping the improved heads will give the benefits we're looking for.

Alan, I would just like to thank you, Rob and Andy for putting together a fantastic looking engine....I have full confidence it will pull as well as it looks!!....also thanks for arranging pick-up /drop off on Saturday night which went well beyond the call of duty....
The engine will be fitted this week at Dave Grice's ScoobyTechs workshop in Wirral. running in and testing will be on Friday with the Brands Hatch Time Attack double header only a fortnight away...
You really have to see it up close to appreciate the quality of the finish, its the best i've seen.
Big thanks to Mark at Lateral for supporting the car this year with his bespoke 2.35 engine components...
And to Chris at CDF racing for the vernier pullies on the exhaust Cams
roll on Brands Hatch....

Thanks Banny....
Took the car to Oulton Park as planned yesterday....after some teething trouble with electrical gremelins we got out and put in a sufficient number of laps to get the engine run in....
First session kept the revs to 5000 with lots of engine braking to bed in the rings, gradually ramped up the boost, throttle and revs and by the end of the afternoon at 7,500 revs I knew the engine would be sufficiently run in for Brands Hatch Time Attack 2 weeks today....
The running in oil will now be dropped and the engine will be treated to 9 ltrs of Motul 300v 15w50....
Thanks to Dave Grice, Andy Carr and Dave Skyline for supporting the car this week and Alan Jeffery for delivering a well sorted 2.35 long block...

I am very interested
How do you get on with the headgaskets?
Also what state are pistons after some use?
I have almost finished a wrc sealing ej22 which I am going to run in my own car.
Cheers
