can you reduce volume without sacrificing performance?
hi all,
so i have a remapped car, full decat etc and a 5" jap-slash cut exhaust.
now, i personally like the noise, yeah its a bit loud, but i like the flat four sound.
problem is, i have two young children both under 2 & when i do take them out, i am concerned about the cabin drone on their sensitive ears.
i dont really fancy fitting a bung as they can really **** up performance, can you guys reccomend an easy back box to change for so there is still some noise, but a little less drone, also, really dont want to sacrifice any performance, so dont fancy adding back on the stock kit.
any advice welcome cheers
and before anyone suggests - the wife wont let me put any protective ear wear on the kids - although it would look pretty funny!!

For the start, you could put resonated center pipe back on and see what will happen, there will be a lot less drone but still deep rumble. Performance won't suffer.
Or some Apexi ECV valve could also be interesting solution.

If its less drone you want and you just want to change the backbox imho get a ninja 2,quite bassy but far less drone .I had one for 6 months and have an old folks home opposite me and i never used the bung once, cant say the same for the afterburner vortex i have now though .There may be a couple of vids on youtube for ninja 2 ,have a look see what you think.Mine cost me £55 used :

However, a stupidly loud backbox with a stupidly big exit looks ridiculous, and to me seems completely pointless.

Thanks guys lots of brands to google and see what's what. I bought the car like this! Didn't put it on myself, I prefer a 3" exit, like a milltek, but I have a full system and it cost nearly a grand on my last car. So what's the best option just backbox? Would prefer a bit smaller and not another bakedbean can!

I have Miltek on mine and its quiet. Backbox pipe size is also rather modest. But the full system is 3" pipework all the way through.
Another option is the revolution 3" exhaust. Again, nice and quiet but doesn't constrain performance.

My recent experience may be of use.
I ran my 05 Sti PPP with an aftermarket exhaust (not sure of make - 4.5" straight cut exit) that came on the car. I love the flat 4 burble as much as the next scoobyphile but the noise does get tiresome after a while.
Switched to the original Prodrive exhaust and really much prefer this setup for a number of reasons.
1. You get a far more 'cultured' sound, you still hear the burble but can now also hear clearly the induction sounds and BOV.
2. The sound no longer dominates the driving experience, sometimes you want to whisk along quickly without letting China know you're pressing on a bit. I find myself using more of the rev range (as its not so loud) and having a better driving experience
3. Very slight improved turbo spool up time - perhaps due to slight increase in back pressure
Would recommend current setup - other option if I were buying new or secondhand would be 3"Milltek. Litchfields cars always sound good but focus on useability. Also you wont need a remap as these are high flow exhausts.
Hope that helps

That's what I've got but the full system with the sports cat. Sounds immense. Good burble and meaty on throttle.

Great thread! I'm asking myself the same thing. What system should I use to reduce noise and not performance?!
Would it be enough with 2.5" mid pipe for 400bhp? And to lower the DB below 90, would it be enough to get a prodrive backbox? that would be the only silencer then.
I have now 2.5" system with 4.5" backbox. And I have added a small resonator in the mid pipe but stil at 98 DB.

I have always wondered what the answer was. I didn't want to use a restrictive bung. I think the answer is resonated parts. Also, my feelings are that the loss of the huge exits mean that back pressure can increase, better spool with less volume

got a full mongoose on mine........93db @5750rpm 1.5m away from car.......great if you want a quiet system........does not hinder performance in the slightest I'm running just under 600bhp and will be running close to 650 in a few weeks.......scoobyclinic use it on all their race cars
