It was a replacement for the Leone....step below in size from the legacy but kept the flat 4 engine.
"new drivers basic" said the Jap brochure.....soft shape so as not to age, looks like a swan landing, frameless windows for ease of repair.......
They wanted a car to make money in a niche market and they struck gold![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Prodrive were rallying the legacy and having some success, Subaru said to them if you can win in the legacy this season then we will give you our new model the Impreza for next year, well they won and Prodrive got the car and along came a scottsman
and here we all are now ![Thumb](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif)
Or something like that it went.

It's in that "Impreza" book.
You gotta love the Japs and their unique 'take' on English... "New Drivers Basic" indeed (+ a gay looking Kyle McLaughlin ad campaign). The crapness.

Have to be on the stipulated numbers of production run cars in the first place to be legal i.e. presumably Subaru/STi did make use of them somehow (maybe added ducting to their undersides for something?). They certianly did on the MY97>on widebody "WRC" spec. cars (not sure about the MY93-96 Group A spec ones, though).

Snip from wikipedia
All 2006 Imprezas, including the performance models, have been redesigned again with the controversial "flying vagina"[6] grille
wtf is that all about? hehe
never heard that before

If they intended on using them in rallying (and presumably they did?), then the homologation rules INSIST on them being on the road cars - it's the whole point of the homologation rule. It was a mechanism purely intended to reign in competitors' 'creativity' due to keeping development costs down -- as they had to be on at least 2,500 or 5,000 road cars (or whatever the number was - can't remember the stipulation).
