Howdy.

I have a 98 scoob turbo, standard with exhaust and k&N, I was suprised the other day when I had a race session on the motorway with a 01 Clio 172. We raced 3 sections of the motorway through 3 roundabouts, slowing and then flat out from second through to 4th on one occassion. I have to say, my car was quicker as it sped up but I was very suprised at how quick the Clio was, there wasnt much in it at all. I had much quicker excel in 3rd upwards, but in first and second the clio was nearly as quick.....it also handled very tightly through the roundabouts.

quiet impressed.

Has anyone else raced these machines ? Maybe it was modded to death, but I get the feeling it was also standard.

Pat.

Druddle has one (queue Dave )

Its quite a nippy little motor, and no AWD loss. He got it after having an MY01, not that much in it once rolling. A few mods to the scoob (like decat) though and bye bye

I had a race with one about 2 weeks after I bought my MY01, it gave me a good run for my money - thought there was something wrong with my Scoob!! Looked at the figures when I got home and realised that the Clio 172 is not a slow motor.

About to decat, so bye bye 172's

thanks Lads.

There are a lovely motor, would be nice if it was treated to a full decat exhaust, cams, chip and a polished head from Primma.

Id say at that point it would be buy buy Scooby....for dead.

I think the clio owners sometimes forget that there are lots of 280bhp+ scoobs about.....some of them must have had a run in with the 208 bhp ones & were quite close as you say....
then they try it on with a "sorted" scoob..different story

I'm sure a few of you will have come across my Clio on various Northern/Midlands meets. It's not as quick as a Scooby, but in the right hands (mine ) it doesn't have a problem 'keeping up' with pretty much any Impreza, Evo, etc.
I get my *** kicked on track though That's where the extra power & 4WD of the Jap mobiles comes in to play. My brakes let me down a bit too!

I'll next be 'demonstrating' my 172 at the Nurburgring, 3rd - 5th May, where I'll be happy to take anyone out for a lap.

Cheers,

Jon

172Jon - I have never raced on a track yet (apart from karts), I will shortly have my motor ready to do that if I dare
I now rekon I have a "sorted" UK scoob just need to learn how to drive it proper on the twisties
I'm just worried about trashing it....

Cool

Shunty, trackdays are a laugh, just be aware that once you've done one, you will want to do more & things can get expensive as you'll wear out or decide to upgrade every component on your car

I think my driving style suits fast road driving better than circuit driving (if that makes sense) I don't like to rely heavily on my brakes & IMHO you need to brake very late & hard to be truly fast on a track. One of my mates sat in with me at Donington & reckoned I was probably loosing a second a corner because I was braking so early.
I'm looking forward to the Nurburgring I've been told it's more like a road than a track.

Jon,

Have you anything done to your Clio ? How many horses does it actually have in its possession?

I think I'll have to get a cat replacement and a Motec unit in....to make sure next time my scoob meets one of you guys, Im admiring the car through my rear view

Cheers Pat.

it was a friendly jibe anway

I know what you mean about the upgrades etc, missus always nagging me I keep telling her I'm finished upgrading now -lol

have you modded your clio 172 much then ?

(overlap with above post question)

The only modification I've made is to fit Mintex 1155 brake pads. However, I soon swopped back to the standard Renault pads as I thought they 'felt' better & the Mintex's got so hot at Donington they bolied my brake fluid!

There's not much available as far as 172 mods go. I've looked at upgrading the suspension, but other than lowering springs there's nothing out there. I wouldn't mind an exhaust, but I don't want a Max Muppet style boomy back box which seems to be all that's around. A K & N panel filter is next on the shopping list.

I agree that a 'sorted scoob' (is there such thing? ) would leave a 172 for dead. However, you'd need to spend at least £5000 on a standard UK WRX to bring it to this level. When you consider that I only paid £11500 for my 172 (import) I think you'll agree that 172's are bloody good value as far a bangs per buck go

Renault are bringing out a 172 'Cup' in the summer. It's going to have the same running gear as a standard 172, but will be stripped out (no air con, leather, ABS, etc.) & will weigh 80kgs less meaning 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds. Retail price £13000 (under £10000 import) Tempted???

Cheers,

Jon

Please don't take this the wrong way, but is it wise to so publicly admit that you raced ?

Hey Jon,

Have you talked to the guys in Prima Racing ? I had a Clio Williams prior to my Impreza. When I bought the car it had been upgraded to nearly 200bhp by Prima. It had a chip, cams and head with a catless exhaust. It was ridiculously quick, I only sold it as it was 94 and I had driven the Subaru and fell in love with it.

You could have that car over 200bhp easily......if youve lots of CASH££££££

My missus has a Clio 172 (latest revision) so I often get to compare this with my own PPP'd MY01 wagon. In terms of outright power it falls a good way short of the scoob, but it is very driveable and has better throttle response. It also handles/grips brilliantly for a front-driver...

In many ways the 172 is more fun (the small car syndrome) but my scoob will always get there first.

There's a good BBS at www.cliosport.net where most potential mods to the 172 have been done to death. In truth I don't think there's anything out there that's going to make a big difference. Also, I'd say that the Clio platform is going to be less tolerant of mods than the scoob, it's just a hot hatch at the end of the day.

Cheers,
Gareth
