Clutch-ing at Subaru straws?
#1
Thought you'd be interested to hear that after mentioning (as opposed to complaining) about a bit of clutch judder to my local dealer in Hull, they've told me Subaru have authorised them to get it in, strip it down and see what's what.
All a tad puzzling - I first told Jordans about it nearly 2 years ago. Said it wasn't a real worry - it happened very infrequently. Usually when cold, but most annoyingly if, when approaching a junction (very) slowly in second, I bang it in to first to make a gap in the traffic. Cue kangaroo impression...
For some reason, they waited until I took it in for its 30K service to ask me to bring it back for a strip down. Didn't say anything about replacing it, though.
I'll post the outcome (should be going in next week). Meanwhile, anyone else had this done?

I've heard of this problem too much ! Anyone had a problem with their P1 ???????
DJB & Dark - which Garages did the warranty work.....?? I dont have the problem, but the garage in Edinburgh has been known to be a *little* difficult to convince with regard to warranty claims in the past .......Just might be helpful in the future

My car, MY00 Turbo (15k), has same cold clutch judder and whelchs in cambridge are about to replace it with a modified clutch assembly. They are having trouble getting one in but have been very good about admitting the problem but arn't sure if the modified clutch housing is the P1 housing or not.
Anyway if subaru have built a modified clutch housing then there is obviously a problem! Take advantage of the warranty now and make sure you get the modified clutch housing and not just another clutch that might get the same problem!
Adrian.

Ditto.
MY00 - approaching 15,000 service with clutch judder when cold.
I was told "they all do that."

Rich - if it is bad, then insist on a warranty replacement. 'They all do that sir' is a pretty poor excuse - they don't. But there is a known problem with the clutches, which has lead to a number of warranty replacements.
Not sure why some garages are 'difficult' about warranty work - surely extra work for them which they get paid for???
Gastro - not sure if P1s suffer with the same problem. The accepted fix is now to use the P1 clutch housing - which is much stronger (this was done on my MY00 at 18K - no problems since (now 23K)).

Trouble is, it isn't really bad - it's all a bit subjective I suppose.
It is bad enough to cause some "kangarooing" on the first few gear changes in the morning.
I was also told by the dealer not to be afraid to give it more throttle to overcome the judder, when the car is cold.
As it is, I don't feel that the problem is so bad that it is a matter of urgency.
Frankly I could live with it if I had to, but what concerns me more is will I wear my clutch out prematurely as a result of applying extra revvs during cold gear changes?

I have mentioned this at every service but it has become more noticeable and feels like it could well be damaging the car/drive train so I waxedlyrical about it on the 22.5k service on Friday and Robinsons have "put my claim in".
They have replaced "a few" under warranty so I am now waiting for them to get back to me. I expect no problems, they have always been open and honest before and I'm not making it up for personal gain.
"They all do that" Isn't that what they said about Concorde? It's not a valid excuse.

I too had the "They all do that, Sir" response when I first mentioned it to a previous dealer (at the 15000 mile service when it was less than a year old). The fact that I had mentioned the fault was noted on the service receipt ("No fault found"). To be fair, I didn't push the issue then but I was warned that if they stripped down the engine and found that it was wear and tear, I would have to pay.
The dealer who replaced the clutch and flywheel was Eaglesham Garage. It should be noted that the engine was already removed to cure piston slap so the cost of replacing the clutch and flywheel as well would have been less (to IM) because of the saving on labour charges.
I don't think that P1's suffer from this problem.

Yeah,
There have been problems with some dealers near Edinburgh (deliberately vague!) as to warranty claims re clutch judder.
T&C in Perth, or the dealer in Stirling apparently did it straight away no questions asked.
However, piston slap was easier to get the "near Edinburgh" dealer to do, and the Stirling dealer didn't do that one!
So - as ever, inconsistency in applying the warranty rules.

Going to ask about getting it fixed on my RB5 at the next service.
Doesn't happen all the time when cold, but twice I've pulled out of a T-junction with oncoming traffic and the damn things started to judder It's bad when it happens; almost to the point of the car stalling. Luckily I've managed to catch it and give it some stick.
One of these days someones not going to be on the ball and have a nasty accident.

Just dropped my 99 Turbo off at the aforementioned dealer 'near Edinburgh' for investigation into its lack of power (not a hope of keeping up with other standard turbos on the last SIDC meet!).
When explaining that the car only held a boost of 10psi, he exclaimed 'if it was boosting to 10psi then your engine would blow up!' So I'm sorry for all you guys running the standard 13/14 psi, you can expect you engines to give way any day now ...
I also got the 'those boost gauges are notoriously inaccurate excuse' as well ... Funny that, why do you fit them then ?
I mentioned the clutch judder which has been getting worse of late, especially since the wet weather has started up again. I was told 'there is no way you are going to be able to get rid of that'. I didn't push the issue, I guess all of my servicing will be done at another dealer from now on (where is the number for that dealer in Stirling ...).
Oh, and the Justy loaner car tops it all off
Andrew.

Andrew, good luck with that dealer in Stirling, maybe it was a one off, but when I phoned I got to an answering machine, left my name and number, I am still waiting fot the call back 4 months later
As for my power problem, that was reported to my current dealer (S&S, Ayr) along with a power graph in December. Following todays phone call it looks like my car will be going in at the earliest 3 weeks from now, so
Happy dealer hunting

To be fair to the dealer ("near Edinburgh" ), I have otherwise found them to be pretty good.
They are sorting out my "popping out of 5th gear" problem under warranty, without any hassle.
They have also treated me well everytime I've been in and I didn't even buy the car from them.

Robertio,
What number did you contact the Stirling dealer on? Their showroom and aftersales offices are in completely different parts of Stirling with seperate numbers. I've known them personally for years and never had a problem contacting them.
Showroom 01786 472088
Aftersales (i.e. bodyshop, repairs, servicing, etc..) 01786 446456
I can highly recommend them.

Huh! Having said I'd post the results of my local dealer's attempt to sort out my clutch, I'm now in dispute with my insurers... Confused? So am I. Jordans of Hull no longer provide courtesy cars, but they will hire out cars at no cost provided the driver's insurance covers it. It never costs, say Jordans. So I have to be the first! My insurers, Norwich Union, together with brokers Bennetts, want £20 to allow me the privilege of driving a Pug 106 for a couple of days! No way, Jose. So now I'm waiting to see if Jordans will come up with an alternative solution. Fortunately, the clutch seems to be in remission - no juddering at the moment.
More as I hear it.
