Default Got to pick a pocket, no brain or two.

Hi all

I'm back here after 4 years tempted to return to scooby ownership but i genuinely need just a little info from you as experienced current owners.

Basically i am setting myself a budget of about 4.5-5k for an impreza sti or a good wrx. I have seen a few about which are mostly blob eye (which i can live with ) or classics. At the moment my average mileage is about 10-15 miles a day plus any weekend mileage, call that potential 50. I'm driving a mk1 leon tdi which has been remapped to about 300lb torque and am looking for something which is going to be similar but give me the jap bug back.

So this leads me on to my questions.

1- i've looked at performance figures and fuel economies between an 02 wrx and 02 sti but in real day to day terms is there a huge amount in it? Do they handle the same bar the engine and looks?

2. With the mileage i've stated above what would you guestimate a weekly fuel cost to be. Its a stop start town journey and would be driven easy. (i'm in deliberation on this point with regards to driving to work as i do have ****lick transport i can use if need be)

These are my two main fears. The leon while its only 185bhp and 300lb torque i'm nervous it will be too close to a normal wrx to warrant getting rid. I know the 0-60 it will get raped but in gear pull is what i like. Then i am dropping from 52mpg to 23-27 dependent on my model choice.

Now i've been on here and other jap forums to know the "if you worry about fuel dont buy one line" so i have that in mind which is why i am on the fence. That said with some genuine help and advice i would like to do some complicated maths and see if it is attainable.

Thanks Jon.

I would also go for the STI as if you get the wrx you are going to want to spend money modifying it to the same spec as the STI which work out more expensive. Plus the modifying bug will bite. go JDM classic even.

Lads, his budget is 4.5K / 5K. He won't get much of a newage STI for that.

It sounds like Mpg is a big factor here and to be honest you are better off keeping a diesel if running as these are high maintainance.

Mpg is I think more a consideration. I bought the diesel when I was doing about 400 mile a week, doing maybe 120 now so just looking to get an idea of dollar.

I spoke to another owner that has an sti claiming about £70 will give around £300 miles ish and have found a couple of blob eyes in my range.

Appreciate help so far

Not far off. If I am a good boy and stay off the boost I can get about 300 miles to £90. I have a sti ppp pushing 325 bhp

If you're only doing 250 miles a MONTH, then fuel isnt going to be a problem. £70 a month (I wish it cost me that! lol) you'll probably be finding that your insurance will cost you more than your petrol.

If you're looking for 300lbs+ torque, get something already modded. Just make sure it hasnt been <over> modded for the engine/gearbox as you dont want to be forking out for either (or both at same time) unless of course you've got extra funds to bring a unmolested scoob up to that standard, but again, make sure the mapper you use is a scoob professional and tell them you dont want the gearbox or engine going pop. They can then restrict your RPM and torque as necessary.

ScoobyClinic all the way for me. Kev is honest, Pat is an great mapper. Prices are average. DO NOT GO CHEAP or you will pay in the long term bud.

Use a company that just does scoobs if possible. They'll know what they're doing then.
