Alcantara trimmed OE steering wheel
Used the search function and found a bit of info on suede covered steering wheels.
Most said that they last between 6 months to 2 years, based on use before the suede starts to fade/shine.
Also, wearing gloves were recommended..
I'm considering getting MY07 RB320 steering wheel re-trimmed in alcantara, and was wondering if anyone has experience of this?
Is it any better than suede?
Is it ok without gloves?
How are they in a daily driver?
I'd be happy if I got a couple of years daily use, before it needed re-trimming!
Any advice welcome

There was a thread about 6 months or so ago about just this and i posted the info of a guy who does re trimming but for the life of me i cannot find his details. He was good and cheap!

I was going to get it done to the S204 steering wheel ,but i couldn't find anyone to do it. I sent the steering of to two different firms only to be told later on they can't do it.

It can be done! ... soft touch leather .... feels great, very tactile!
I think its a much nicer solution to an old shabby wheel than putting in an airbagless aftermarket one

That looks great! & the exact colour match I want..
Did you or the trimmer put much padding in? Or just use what OE padding was there?
Also, did you leave the centre 'airbag' section OE?

No padding, just stripped the old wheel and rewrapped it!
Soft touch leather is slightly thicker than alcantara anyway.
I got him to use the shade of ST leather that best matched the air bag as i wanted to leave that as it was with the momo centre ring and such like.

Yep personally think an alcantara type finish would look nicer.
know anyone who could do the oe steering wheel in this a bit cheaper than the op £120 quote ??

He was telling me alcantera (spelling?) is more expensive than leather
He was doing the full interior on that big 4x4 seats dash door cards wheel centre consol in alcantera with contrasting stitching and small amount of leather too
Said 2 k which I thought was cheap

I've been reliably informed that the removal of the airbag, is as follows;
Firstly disconnect the battery for your own safety.
Make sure wheel is in dead centre positioning
then look at the rear of the steering wheel on the sides as they taper to the steering wheel cowling you will see a hole on each side with torq's screw (T45 of hand I think ) hidden in that recess. undo both sides and lift out the horn/airbag assy.
now unclip the earth wire which is more horn related, then look at the connector on the air-bag assy, lift up the yellow clip and gently pull the plug out of the module. Then place to one side.
Then grab hold of the steering wheel and with an appropriate bar and socket hold the wheel and slacken the nut off a few turns then basically go either side of the steering wheel and give a quick bang with you hands to lift it off it's splines, then undo the nut until it comes off and gentely remove the steering wheel. N.B make sure you take note of the clock spring position when you remove the steering wheel.
Reassemble in reverse order when you get your wheel back.

Going to have my RB's OE wheel & spokes Alcantara, with Cherry Blossom Red stitching (if that's the OE red colour)!
Not decided on the horn/airbag centre section?? Leave or trim in Alcantara??
Also going to thicken the rim up a bit, the company said the use a thin neoprene material.
Anyone have any other ideas as to what to use to thicken the wheel rim up?
