Put my car (estimated value £3K) into a garage a few week ago.
Initially I had a call to say the fault was the dual mass flywheel & clutch. I informed them the clutch was replaced very recently (less than 10k miles ago) and probably won't need replaced. Estimate was £800 for cluch and £400 for flywheel). They installed a new clutch anyway which did not need to be done in my opinion.
Next they called to say the driveshaft required replacing (£500).
Then they said they had put a new tyre on (which I had not authorised at £80 + VAT). I could have bought tyre and had it fitted for £65 all in!
They have called back to say the car is now cutting out at 2000rpm and requires a new fuel pump (£600). The car was not cutting out at all when I handed it to them!
Total bill £2600 on a car that is worth £3000. Surely they should have gave me a full quote for all work required at the outset to allow me to make a decision on wether its worth repairing the car or cutting my losses and scrapping it instead of informing me of costs one at a time and the bill constantly incresing.
Can i dispute
1) The clutch did not need replacing as it was just done? (Can i demand to see the old clutch?)
2) I did not ask for the tyre to be changed and am only willing to pay the £65 I would have spent
3) The car was not cutting out at 2000rpm when they took it and the fault is not my problem therefore am not liable for the fuel pump cost?

WTF £600 for a new fitted fuel pump? it's a 20 minute job to replace one of them and they retail for something like 70-80 quid!

Jesus.. What car is it ??
You cannot fit any part without the customers consent..
Tell them to return the car back to how it was and return the car to you.
Its bad practice not to fit a new clutch, even though it has only been in a short time..I can understand that decision, but the rest sounds like they have bolloxed things along the way..

£500.00 for a driveshaft! - i would be interested to know what sort of car it is. i would have thought £200 closer to the mark £100 for the shaft and the rest in labour - approx 2 hours.
Need some more info - what did the car go in for in the first place?
all the work would need to be quoted and agreed prior to commencing surely!?!
If the clutch was replaced and the recent clutch was only 10K old then i would ask why it was replaced and want to see it and be shown what is wrong with it. Maybe the flywheel damaged it but at 10k miles it should be pretty good.
All in all the garage sound rather iffy, still two sides to every story.

They are not allowed to carry out any work unless you have told them too.
Ask for all the old parts for independent inspection.
And it sounds to me like they have maybe damaged the drive shaft on removal, they are maybe trying to get you to foot the bill for a heavy handed tech, prob bashing the CV joint end to get it out the hub and damaged the threads/mushroomed the end and can't get the nut on now this fairly common.
As for the car cutting out judging by what they have been repairing it could be they have damaged the crank sensor/ flywheel sensor which can cause cutting out and no revs at around 2 to 3k rpm on most cars..
This is just me thinking out loud in my opinion, it may well be the car does need these things and it is no fault if the garage but I would be checking..
PS I am a former Nissan GTR master technician with over 15 years in the trade and these things do happen, I have seen and done damage to cars in the process of removing parts, accedents do happen and garages will put the cost to the customer before coughing up themselves..
Best of luck mate..

Yes, dual mass flywheel caused it to break down, driving along at 70mph then a bang with loss of power, still barely driveable to urse it round to garage. (still revving all the way through counter and not cutting out at 2000rpm though.

Should have said they could have put the flywheel on in the wrong position and that can also cause a car to cut out run wrong as the sensor is getting the wrong readings at the wrong time too..

If its a TDCi,then you can get solid flywheel conversions because the DMF's are ****..
They are supplied and fitted for £700 inc clutch..
The offside driveshaft is a common failure whilst stripping out the gearbox, the centre support joint collapses(bad design)..
If the car has done around 100k,then you was probably in for a few of these jobs anyway..If its a low mileage car suspect they have cocked something up..
Either way...the prices quoted are massivly overinflated..IIRC driveshafts are around £80 reconditioned.

Have you paid the bill?
Where are they getting their prices from??? £800 clutch? £400 flywheel? £600!!!!! fuel pump?
They are having you on mate! Don't pay the bill and get the work done else where.

jags aren't cheap to run, mates got one, £800 to replace the brakes pads from a dealer. (cost him half that from a mates garage lol)
any work carried out has to be authorised, you have a right to refuse to pay if you didn't, however it may depends on what you were asked and what you said.

damaging driveshaft thread is not acceptable
with a copper mallet and put the hub nut on until its flush with the end of the shaft, a few whack it can easily take and come out.
thats an apprentice, left alone mistake!
tbh sounds like a independant garage i used to work for, coining in as much as the could wring out you.
altho feul pumps do fail, at any given time. id be asking for all my old parts - altho now, they can just go to the skip and pick out any old, fcked clutch and fuel pump now.

Used to have impreza actually and took car to garage which specialises in subarus and mitsubishi purely because I used them in the past and were 3 miles from where the car broke down
