Default 06 Plate WRX STi Information

Well folks I am back after a spell away. And looking to pick all your knowledgeable brains yet again.

I have put £100 deposit down on a 2006 WRX STi, pending seeing the car on Monday. But before I go looking to see if people can give me the information i need to take to the showroom.

So here goes:

  • 06 Standard STi - with 90% legal driving of 60-70 on the motorway what mpg am i likely to see (my current Focus ST at 280bhp does around 27mpg)
  • 06 Plate - is this the £450 a year road tax?
  • Tank size and cost to fill at £1.45 per litre
  • Car has full Subaru Service History is there anything i should be looking directly at.
  • Focus to STi - is it a good move
That's really about it. Anyone who can fill those gaps in, i would appreciate.

Thanks

Sean

- 22-25mpg
- £460 per year road tax
- tank is 50ish litres (Costs ~£70 to fill with super unleaded, which you NEED to do)
- Check for brake and tyre wear cos these will cost you and might be negotiable at the dealer. Make sure it had major service at 50k miles too (including timing belt)
- Is it a good move? Hell yes.

I once drove from London to newcastle at 50-60 mph and got 33 mpg. Since I got it remapped that same journey did 26.

Thanks mate. MPG is going to be worse than the ST, but i expected that with the 4 wheel drive.

Road tax at almost £200 a hike is a real pain.

Car has 36k on it and dealer has just had the timing belt done. So good for another 40k.

I dont know what to do lol.

If you can afford to run it, even if just for a year, do it. You could get hit by a bus 2moro and never having owned a subaru would make Jesus angry.

Is a good move if it's what you want and can afford it. I just don't understand why you left a deposit if not 100% sure, I will add that I had fords all my driving life and do not regret moving over. Ford unfortunately do not make anything that appeals to me anymore. Only thing you can do is drive it see if it's what you want, not sure about uk cars as I went jdm but ride is very hard and not all passengers appreciate it,

Had 05 Civic Type R from new, test drove an Focus St, much prefered the Civic, then bought a new Sti Hawkeye in 07, it wipes the floor with both of them.

If its a standard UK STI, make sure you drive it first. You'll find the ride rock hard compared to the Focus, making it jumpy for normal B roads. A set of coilovers or decent springs will sort the suspension. The UK Hawk STI has just 280bhp and will need some mods to make it able to keep up with an ST in the mid range .
Now if it was a JDM.....2 litre car

Lets see if we can answer those questions below

•06 Standard STi - with 90% legal driving of 60-70 on the motorway what mpg am i likely to see (my current Focus ST at 280bhp does around 27mpg)

Probably about the same mpg if not slightly better (but not much)

•06 Plate - is this the £450 a year road tax?

For the hawkeye 2.5's it is yes.

•Tank size and cost to fill at £1.45 per litre

60ltr tank.

•Car has full Subaru Service History is there anything i should be looking directly at.

Head gaskets are an issue on this model year and engine, then there is the piston issue also....

•Focus to STi - is it a good move

Yes, dont be too put off by the above in normal (standard) form the 2.5 isnt a bad engine, it has some problems (more than any other subaru unit unfortunately), but you have to be careful when tuning them, around 360bhp is seen as the limit on the pistons in that particular engine.
Also check the A-DCCD (Auto Drivers Control Centre Differential) is working all ok, put it into manual, bottom green, drive forward, backwards, introduce turning forwards left and right (full lock) and the same to reverse, there should be absolutely no sound from the drive train, also there should be no resistance (you may get that if you leave the car in auto mode), then after you have done that, move it up a couple of notches and do the same, you will feel and/or hear the difference, just put it back to the bottom green then.

Ah then thats an MY05 car, totally different beast here you will want to up the power on that, fairly cheap to do, remap, exhaust, fuel pump and your looking at 340-350bhp, engines are pretty solid on the 2ltrs, you can easily tune them into the 400bhp mark with no issues
Still check the a-dccd though.
