obviously the suspension and gear ratios are different but I'm only really interested in the shell/chassis and am just wondering if there are any differences between the 2?
Externally yes, the running gear is where the differences are.
hoping to buy a bare shell so running gear is irrelevant as I will be putting newage gear in I'm guessing that newage coilovers won't fit on a classic shell?
Correct. The intercooler water spray was removed to make room for ABS which was required by UK law. The DCCD was then removed because they hadn't figured out how to make it work with ABS!

You will need to change the top mounts on the rear, not sure about the fronts.

ABS isnt a requirement by law, the issue was that Prodrive/Subaru thought that the owners couldnt handle the dccd so went for a car that was easy to drive yet powerful, it still caught a few owners out though
Another difference but not to the shell p1 was done so it ran on UK fuel. Type r fresh imports needed to be mapped
The P1 runs the same map as the version 5/6 JDM cars, yup for 100 ron fuel, it has more knock correction added and broquets to increase the ron value (they are suppose to last 200k miles), one of the reasons that they blew engines up (det ) on bad fuel.
havent reshelled mine but it is type r with six speed and twin scroll setup and have sti 8 lump in my garage as a winter project really do get the best of both classic looks newage tech

This was my idea, I would have the good strength in the sti8 engine and 6 speed box and the brembos to stop me all wrapped up in a nice classic shell which weighs much less than a newage car would
so the shells are practically identical other than slight cosmetic differences and the main difference between the 2 was engine and transmission.
that's all I really need to know then as I will be using my blob sti as a donor car if I go through with it so anything other than the shell is irrelevant as it will be surplus to requirements
Yep, I'd have a Type-R over a P1 every time... P1 is a soft Type-R!
I await a flaming from all the P1 owners
LOOOOOOOOOOOOL.............no flaming here mate I agree.........back then if I knew what I know about impreza's as I know now I would have ended up getting a type-R instead but put to much cash into it in the end
one of the best bits that type R has that prodrive took off the P1 is the R180 diff and 2 pot hubs at the rear, stronger diff and the ability to fit bigger brakes much easier not having to do daft little mods etc etc
