Exedy or AP racing clutch?
Hey people, I'm looking to get a new clutch for my 2003 STI. Mostly been looking at exedy and ap racing clutch kits but not sure what to go for and maybe a lightened flywheel. If anyone could offer some advice or info or maybe had one of them fitted? Cheers

I would say AP organic any day of the week. I have AP in mine and have had the same one for 3 years now without any issues. Taken out for my rebuild and it looks in perfect condition still.

I do hear good things about ap racing clutch but is it worth paying the extra +-£150 for that clutch over the exedy? By the way I'm running 360bhp 360torque just to add.

I did alot of reaserch when getting a clutch spoke to some of the big people in the scooby scene and there all said depends on budget etc but the ap wins hands down
I have ap clutch and a standard flywheel perfect,
Talk to Alan at As performance he will look after you and give plenty of advice and actually knows what he is talking about, unlike certain other company's

Yeah I agree with -shane- Ap is just better. I have had Exedy, HKS, AP, and the AP is just so much better than the others.
I now use an AP group A one, but the standard AP organic kit is fantastic.

I think your question has been answered ap clutch standard skimmed flywheel perfect,
I've also heard the excedy not lasting long also problems with juddering etc, do the job once and do it correctly :-)

I looked into that thing about the exedy clutches juddering and apparently exedy made an anti-judder clutch to fix the problem. My budget is about £700-£750 for clutch and flywheel but if I go just the clutch ill just have the flywheel cleaned up/very lightly skimmed just to clear high spots. So no one thinks a lightened flywheel is so good then, has anyone had one fitted that you can feel noticeable power gains/drivability or decrease in power?

The AP is a decent clutch, we'll be having the Carbonetic Pro Blade kits for Scoobs coming into us in the new year, they come with a light weight flywheel and are rated to 500bhp 500llb/ft with OEM feel, we've fitted them to a couple of Evo's so far and they certainly represent the next step in clutch technology, they retail at £870 but naturally I will be putting together some offers for you Scoobynetters!

while ap helix etc are very good they are twice the price and some of an exedy.
the exedy is more than up to the job of a mildy tuned sti.
i have the anti judder one and its a1 imho an ap etc is overkill for my needs.
they are good clutches and do the required job perfectly.

We use and supply "Comp Clutch" these days. A super clutch and we'd use the organic Stage 2 for your power level £295.00 + VAT [ £354.00 inc ] Just take a bit of ' running in ' to get settled and then after 400 miles of gearchange type driving they suddenly settle and just work.
A very well priced clutch that fits most models and budgets.
See here http://www.apiimpreza.com/frames/pro...&categoryID=16
l'll probably do a group buy in the New Year after everyone's wallet has recovered.

Most suppliers of clutches will reccommend that you either skim or replace the flywheel for the new clutch. If they didn't at the time of purchase it will certainly come up if you have a problem later. If the flywheel hasn't done many miles it may be ok but usually best to have it checked for heat damage/ high spots and have a true surface for the new clutch.

I broke the centres out of two Brand new AP organic clutches at around 380bhp. Was fed up with buying new clutches so I bought a second hand Exedy as a temporary fix. It ended up doing 30,000 miles without issue.
I've bought nothing but Exedy since including the twinplate I have now.
Personally I'd go for the Exedy Pink box clutch everytime!!

AP racing clutches are superior to the Exedy pink box, no question. The 240mm 6spd clutch is capable of running up to 450lb/ft.
