mr2 vs scoob ?
hi all , my mates just got himself a version 4 mr2 turbo and tonight we was having a play now my impreza has had thousands spent on it and his mr2 was £1200 standard apart from big twin back boxes and an induction kit , so would imagine about 230bhp? as its old now and probably lost a few pony's ? my 02 wrx has 360.1 bhp and 320lbs ft of torque , now i know imprezas are really all about 0-60 thats why i got one but on a long straight already travelling at 40 then foot down to 120 the mr2 stayed level its a quick little bugger ! but im a tad dissapointed in the scooby after all that money to be honest thought id slaughter him ? now im thinking about a rwd already cos i like the idea of all the power going to 2 wheels not 4 .

That was your problem, AWD rolling losses will be of a higher percentage than that of the Mr2.
Remember, you have 5 seats, he has 2 and RWD in the winter...
Just to add, it was a "private" road, right

how dare you compare a mr2 to a subaru
next time make sure you use the cars handling and turn some corners,
mr2s like bends lol
just remember to tell them they have a hairdressers car

oh yea it was a private road definately also my ive noticed in 3rd gear mostly , my vf34 seems to surge slightly at about 4.5-5 k ? its only done about 3k miles , could this be the dreaded boost creep ive read about ? also "sorry for all the questions" my boost guage has stopped working recently , i have no idea as of why yet but could this be linked with the surging turbo at all ? sorry if its a stupid question ? but i still have much to learn , im not a scooby jedi yet
thanks for any help

That wont be a standard MR2 turbo, you should eat it for breakfast in standard form, even standard v standard it would be close, I think your mate has a slightly modded one

im pretty sure mate , he wasnt told of anything else and it still has cats on exhaust , doubt its anywhere near that figure ? am i right in saying rev 4s are 240bhp standard ? so add a bit for filter then take a bit off for its age ?? also dont think its ever been mapped ?

The other thing is that your car may have reduced its IAM for some reason, hence it seems his is quicker.

They are a decent motor, and they do handle well, also bare in mind it's going to be a fair bit lighter than your car, so it's no wonder it was able to stay with you, next time do it in the wet on a country road, then you will show him a clean pair of heels.
But there is more to it than numbers as you discovered

Check the engine if it has an old style flap type afm then it's the 240, but later ones were definately 270+ With improved heads, afm, and better turbo.
May have had an engine swap? I don't know which rev the later engine started I have a gut feeling it was rev3>, best way is to have a nose at his engine next time you see it, the early afm it quite large and internally has a flap that measures the airflow, later ones are the more modern style hot wire..

If you are struggling with a standard MR2 turbo then something isn't quite right buddy.
Either your BHP figure was issued on a very optimistic dyno...
Your driving needs some serious sorting....
Or the MR2 is not as standard as you think.
I'm pretty sure they came in at around 1250KG so they are a light little car compared to yours and as stated above the MR2 won't have the transmission losses you will. But with circa 100bhp more power you really should be seeing him off.
I'd be interested to see your car run on another dyno, I think that maybe 360 is a tad optimistic given the turbo your running.

yea i think the 360.1bhp is over the top too mate to be honest ! david at api did say the rollers need looking at ? and unless its 2.1 stroker 360 doesnt happen often eh ? im kind of annoyed really , as paying money for it to be mapped you would expect at least true power output of your car ? or is that just me because i dont know if its 320 or 360 now ? i know its just numbers at the end of the day but we want to know the power of our cars dont we ? if the rollers are not right then dont map on them

Mapping on a dodgey dyno doesn't matter as your car is still getting mapped correctly (depending who's doing it) but the bhp will just be off. Some mappers would be able to give you a rough estimate from experience just by driving your car.
If I was you chap I'd be getting the car over to another dyno for a 2nd run to ease your mind. Maybe RCM's dyno...

Hopeless......
Drive an MR2 and you keep the revs near engine breaking point, come to a corner as fast as you dare and brake as little as possible before to carry as much speed as possible through the corner.....
Drive an Impreza and you drive as fast as you can towards the corner if you didn't brake you will run into the ditch...then brake like **** and a bit more before the corner as hard as you can hoping you have wiped off speed so the grip will get you through the corner....
Chalk and cheese LOL

I would guess (and this is just my opinion) that your car is making somewhere in the region of 330 bhp. The MR2 is lighter than your car so if it in the region of 270 bhp it will give you trouble.
Bet he had a right laugh at you when you told him how much you've spent on your car..
I remember a pal keeping with me in a standard STI V2 after I'd just thrown 3K at my GTIR. He didn't ever let me forget it the *******.

ive always wanted a gti-r but heard unreliable ? is it the sr20dett used in 200sx ? i guess 330ish also which is what i was expecting in the first place anyway and guess my mates about 240ish ? so 90bhp difference but mine to 4 wheels his to 2 ! also as mentioned his is lighter ! but dont matter mine is still quicker if i had the ***** to keep my foot in ?
