There is no cost effective way to 500bhp.

It costs money. Anywhere from 15k upwards area.

Personally i would go for a newage over a classic if its going to be a road car because its got the 6 speed, is more rigid and modern . I wouldn't worry about the engine so much as pretty much everything will be replaced anyway.

First is whats it going to be used for.

You are just as well starting with a shell, as you will be changing every thing anyway.

I'd stay at 450 ish which is doable from an sti easily and cheaply compared to going over 500.

The Best cost effective way to 500bhp

is to ask a fellow sn member with 500bhp if you can sit in his/her car as a passenger

I cant give any advice on this myself but what advice I can give is before you make any desicions make sure you talk to

david from api
martin from engine tuner

or any of the other respected engine builders on here as they really no there stuff and I would be far more inclined to listen to them than listen to other suggestions

good luck in your venture

AS as an everyday car I would suggest a new age sti as they are more refined and also have the 6 speed fitted which will save 2-3k in upgrading the classic 5 speed. there are many ways to go engine wise, 2.0, 2.1 stroker kit, 2.35 if you have loads of cash, 2.5 can do it but they need pinning and are looked upon to not be a wise choice if aiming above 500.

More to the point is which ever route you take and I would speak to a well known tuner it will set you back 10-15k min, as well as keeping it all running.

So do you need 500bhp are you tracking it or just a road car? If you have had money issues why drop 15k in a car that you will never get back.

Two options settle for a newage 02 onwards sti and for reletivly little cash they will run low to mid 4's or buy a modded impreza already running what you want, which in theory you should able to sell on for similar money that you paid for it.

What ever you do best of luck

I recall a tuner telling me a story about one of their clients:

Punter: I want 500 bhp.
Tuner: have you ever been in a 500bhp car
Punter: No
Tuner: ok, lets go for a spin in mine
*after coming back from a drive*
Punter: That's Exactly what I want
Tuner: Well, that was a 380bhp car and costs about 1/3 of the money that a 500bhp car would cost.
Punter: Oh!

As everyone says above, there is no cost effective way of doing this, just an effective way that costs. At that level pretty much everything has to be attended to, including brakes and suspension. I'm not saying don't do it (I did - well 470/480) but I am saying is don't think for a second that it can ever be inexpensive - it can't.

Also echo the above comments about starting with a new age.

Your best bet for 500 is a 2.1 stroker short block. Standard AVCS heads will flow to 500+.

You'd need to upgrade your fuel pump, injectors, turbo, clutch and gearbox. At 500 I'd also suggest upgrading your brakes too

As a base, I'd go for an '02 Bugeye Sti. It has everything you need, Brembo brakes, six speed box, AVCS etc in the most cost effective way.
2.1 stroker of course.
As somebody said, I'm forever asking that "have you actually experienced 500 bhp yet?" question and I get the same response when I take them out with 400 ish.

"Chuffin' 'Eck.."

I've had one or two discover a religious streak they didn't know they had, when having a 600 bhp plus demo..

500 in a classic would be mental as they only weigh 1200kg if you went that route buy one there / almost there already as it will cost mega $'s to upgrade all the bits yourself ...

Newage STi - MD321T or V, FMIC, 750cc Injectors, Fuel pump, decat, Simtek ecu, uprated clutch, 10-20% & you have 500bhp.

That is the cheapest way to get to 500 & it has been done before with no trouble. I will be doing it soon.

Cheapestway to get a 500bhp car is to buy one hats already done, as said above you may need to drive one as not driving a car with only 500bhp may give you a shock.

I am going down this route as we speak ! Classic rb5 , 2.5 fully forged

I agree with most of the comments on here regarding costing ! 6 speed , clutch , pinning the block , injectors , ecu , exhaust , turbo , etc ! The list goes on , oh brakes to stop !!

I already had the rb5 when I decided this route so saved money bit by bit ! Should be done hopefully by feb and ready to run in .

Lol , yeah should be fun running around 330 bhp at the moment but drivers side rocker leaking a bit and engine done 80k now so decided on a new build as keeping the car for a few years now ! Reading lots of comments on here from regulars saying " youll want more " who I,m sure will laugh ! So decided to go the whole hog ..
